another arsonel question
« on: April 06, 2004, 01:36:36 AM »
Ok.  i know everyone is getting tired of these questions.  but its about that time of year again for me to set up another arsonel.  but what do you think about this 5 ball arsonel.

Track Animal (heavy oil)

Columbia Ego (med. heavy)

Visionary Green Gargoyle (med. light)

Columbia Wild (light/dry)

Ebonite Maxim (spares)

I'm a little worried because every ball i have in there except for the Animal is a pearl ball.  and i was kinda wondering if i should replace a ball with some solid reactive for the days that there has been a lot of bowling and theres carrydown.  but thats my "probable" arsonel.  so let me know what you think.  im a track and columbia head, and this will be my first time trying to use a visionary ball.  Ive heard good things about them. so i'm giving them a try.  all my specs are in my profile.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

It looks like a good 4 ball arsenal for most conditions.  I think the Green Gargoyle and Wild may overlap a bit.  If they are drilled differently and you're not afraid to play with the surfaces, both might be useful.

hmmm.  well i wasn't completely sure if i was going to have the wild in there.  but what can i say.  ive had some really good luck with that ball.  its got 2 800s, a 299 and a 280 under its belt.  and its always the first ball out of my bag so i decided i'd probably try another one and if it didn't work i'd just go back to my old one.  reason i said the green gargoyle is because it sounded like it was a ball that could handle more oil than the wild.  but if theres another ball from visionary that would fit the position better let me have it.  i was even thinking about the G-3 Griffin but it almost sounds like that might overlap the EGO.  what do you think?

I'm not too familar with the reaction of the Ego, but when you said solid reactive, I thought of an Ebonite V2 Solid or Dynothane Vendetta Black Solid for all-purpose type solid reactives.

Since you are a Track/Columbia guy, maybe a Track Crunch or Havoc would fit the spot.

imjouster - Don't worry too much about having all pearl balls, especially since you're (according to your profile) a high-rev player.  You can always use pin placement/layout and core shape to help a ball deal with carrydown. (simply put, a ball that flares more will deal with carry down better than a ball that doesn't flare much).  That EGO with a pin 3-4 inches from the PAP will deal with carrydown just fine.  Alternately, you can sand down the surface of any pearl to get it to move sooner if you need to.

You also need to ask yourself what spectrum of different lane conditions you expect to compete on.  If you don't bowl in more than 5/6 different houses a year, what you're proposing will cover just about everything you'd need.

The only problem I can see with the arsenal - where are you going to get a 5-ball bag?

Don't worry about posting arsenal questions - I don't think people get sick of them, just sick of silly/inane arsenal questions.
