Another bowling center closing........
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:53:55 AM »
That seems to be a popular trend right now.  Just found out another center in my area is closing.  To be honest, I'm not at all surprised.  There have been several centers to close in my area over the last decade.  One thing they all had in common was when you walked in them, they still looked like they did 30 years ago with maybe some minimal updates.

The bowling centers that are still thriving in my area are newer more up-to-date type centers.  They are places you would want to take your family.  Not the old dim lighted, low ceilings, stills smells like smoke from 10 years ago type places.

I wish more centers would update more like what you see on the AMF Qubica's website.  Not suprising is that most of the centers shown are overseas.  Bowling is still fun for everyone, we just need to get the buildings brought up to today's standards.  (See pic below)

Rumour has it here in MN that there are a handful right in the metro area are on the chopping block.  Something to do with an AMF bankruptcy?  Haven't verified that myself, but that's what I am hearing.  Sad days . . . .

It is a function of natural selection.  The characteristics of bowling centers 30 years ago suited the clientele just fine.  Now, the average bowler wants different amenities and the bowling centers of the future either change to accommodate those needs or dies and goes away.

I can see a time when there will actually be too few of lanes for what the bowling community needs.  There was an AMF center here that was told it would be closing this month.  The other AMF and privately owned centers will try and absorb those bowlers, but some are reaching a maximum capacity.  In order to accommodate the new bowlers, they may have to go to two shifts of leagues on certain nights.  Is this what today's bowler wants?  Not sure.

But with AMF closing a lot of the centers across the country, I'm sure there is a chance for someone to pick up lanes and pinsetters cheap.  The center here that closed is a leased facility and the lanes and equipment will be removed from the building.  Perhaps AMF doesn't want to sell it installed in the building to prevent competition to the other AMF nearby.

Either way, competition will eventually give the bowler of today what they want.  At least until the needs change and we go through this all over again.

Dog .. hard to disagree with you .. what you say is TRUE!  Not many Centers in my area (Raleigh NC)are in the condition you describe for older places. I agree that bowling has faded but think there's more to it then 'run down centers'!

Centers close to my home are doing fairly well (from my observation). I think it has to do with Center management. They are always advertising and doing specials that are keeping folks interested in bowling. Yes they do have the Centers clean and offer a Snack bar,Pro shop and Bar with waitress service (at league time) and good service for Lane troubles.

There are AMF centers and Local owners in the area.

I recently visited my old neighborhood in Long Island NY. Didn't visit a whole lot of Centers but where I did go it appeared that they were doing better then 2 years ago. Not saying bowlings coming back but I think it might have leveled off. It will  PROBABLE never get back to where it was 20 years ago .. but PERHAPS it's bottomed out!

If all the Center managers work at it like it appears happening in my area .. there might still be hope for bowling!

And that is the key. Most old centers I know, the management is operating like it did 40 years ago.

Unfortunately this has been the trend here in the Detroit metro area. Many alleys have closed in the past 10 - 20 years. I know some of the reasons are due to the severe loss of jobs in this area, but most of the alleys have not been updated. They look just about the same as they did back in the 80's, with minimal updates. Updates can help some, but I feel that most people have other issues to deal with and bowling isn't one of them. If you don't have a passion for the game, then it wont be a priority. I love the game, but most people don't, so it will not have a priority. With that being said, bowling will not thrive as it once did. I will continue to enjoy the sport that I always have. Hopefully others will too.

Many of the centers that close don't promote their product. They think by opening their doors they have done everything they should. That is not the way to run a business and if places continue to do so they will follow others with similar business models. This applies to any business.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Centers today can't make the proper return with yesterdays equipment.  If they don't upgrade they can't charge the proper dollar to make a profit.  This is true in any business but it hits hard in the bowling world.  It's a new business today bottom line.

Cost for new scoring for 24 lanes $135000.  Cost for 24 synthetic lanes $135000.  Bowling pins  $12 each.  It takes 21 to run an A2 properly.  New Kegel lane machine $25000 Amount of bowlers willing to pay more to get these items????  Many proprietors can barely pay the electric bill now.

People are no longer interested in paying $5.00 a game to go bowling every night of the week.   The proprietor can't keep the place open unless they charge that price.  There always will be some weekend interest in the game for a recreational activity Mostly people who are  looking for a change in their weekend fun from time to time.

There are fairly modern centers in my area that are clean and well maintained.   They have $1.00 a game almost every evening.

The places are empty every evening...

People are not interested in bowling like they used to be.  It has no zing to it and when you add the zing to it than it costs $5.00 a game and people can't afford it.

AMF got rid of their league bowling some nights, and failed to cater to their league members when they had that center buying frenzy.  Those in charge thought the $5.00 a game open play was going to take care of all the bills.

Some of these centers never were able to regain their league play once AMF over the last few years has found out that getting rid of leagues and not making leagues their priority was a big mistake.

I couldn't agree more with you guys on all accounts. Bowling is down, for many reasons. Blame the economy, a lack of interest or whatever else you want but the result is the same regardless of the cause. I live in the Birmingham, Alabama metro area and in our small town there is only 1 center within 50 miles in any direction. Yet they seem to struggle. I believe the biggest reason for this is a lack of updating the facility. I moved here with my family in spring of 1991 and unless I'm just forgetting something, the only thing that has been updated since that time is the scoring monitors, the pins and a few pool tables. The paint on the 70's era hard plastic seats are worn down to the primer beneath them and many are cracked. The wood lanes are about as old as the building which I know has been there at least 30 years. I couldn't even begin to guess when the last time they were resurfaced was. We don't have a pro shop you can actually go into and get things when you need them. It almost always has to be ordered. We have about 7 centers in Birmingham and all but one of them are doing well. The one that isn't is in worse condition then the one I bowl in at home. The bottom line is that you have to be willing to spend money to make money. I suppose in some cases it's easier said than done. I only know that when I walk into a center and I actually see that there's an effort being made to make me feel welcome, I find myself wanting to go back often. That said, the opposite is also true. I pray that people who own bowling centers and care about the sport and their investment, will continue to do what they need to in order to keep their doors open. As for the ones who are running bowling centers and really have no interest in doing anymore than the bare minimum, I would advise them to sell out to someone who will give it the attention it needs or even better, take an interest in the business that you have invested your time, money and energy into and you just might be surprised with the results you get. That is all, thank you.

I have seen the same as stormdamage. There is a center that had/has no interest in what the bowlers of the place have been telling them. I have talked with the manager several times over the course of two years and he always says that this is how this place is gonna be. Well, now just about every league has moved out of the place, with the best one this past off season. By best I mean all 13 teams (sarcasm), which was down from 20 something which was down from a full house which is 32 or 6. The problems range from poor lane conditions which causes poor carry to general break downs that can last for weeks to years.
The sad part is they can take what is left of all their leagues, put them in one league and probably not use all the lanes. Bye bowling center
