talk about a delusional individual:
quote:
"Bowling is not on the decline,” said Ron MacDonald, director of the Oklahoma City Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum. "There are still people who bowl and bowl in leagues. The enthusiasm and desire to bowl is still there.”

Actually, he's correct.  The enthusiasm and desire to bowl is still there among bowlers.  Non-bowlers could care less just like non-golfers could care less when a golf course is sold and becomes condos.

While there is no doubt that SOME enthusiasm remains, the reality is that the number of bowlers AND leagues dwindles year after year.  And not all bowlers have the desire to bowl leagues in the present condition of the USBC...I'm a walking case in point.

And when numbers decline, it is delusional to assert that bowling is not on the decline...

66 bowl in OKC was once a great house to bowl in. I for one used to bowl in it when it was properly taken care of. However the past few years, the Lanes & Pin Setters haven't been maintained and kept up there and have been allowed to get a bit worse every year. The bowlers have gradually been drifting away from there because of that and going to other bowling houses in this area. I've had bowlers bowling or were bowling at 66 Bowl message me complaining about the condition things at 66 Bowl and asking about Heritage Lanes where I bowl and of which is one of the better maintained houses in the OKC area.

Thus, it is of my opinion that this is part of the problem for their closing plus the owners of this house are getting "up there" in their years and probably feel it is time to give it up, especially when they have a buyer for their bldg/location.

I don't agree with how the USBC is running things compared to the past, but one big reason many bowlers quit/leave now days is because of how the lanes and pin setters are maintained now days more than how USBC is running things..... I am a walking case in point here in that I quit one house I bowled in for over 20 years because of how it had been allowed to get bad and had it not been for a properly maintained house close by that I now have been bowling for the past 5 years, I would have quit bowling.

While it is sad to see centers close, I feel it is just the bowling industry adjusting itself to the economic time of today and the amount of bowlers that are left. After all is said and done the country will have less places to bowl bt the place left should be a little more busy than today. Leagues will be fuller etc. etc. and while bowling may not get better it will appear to be.

One of the top scoring and long time centers in Dallas also bit the dust this week. Jupiter Bowl has been known for scores before it was even popular. Several years ago the owner sold to a local group, who sold to AMF, who ran it in the ground and shut the doors. It was resurected by a local bowler who also owns another center. He could not save it, after heavy investments put him in bankruptcy this Thursday he closed it up and handed back to the bank. Drove by today to find the doors locked, really sad. The center has struggled since Dallas went smoke free, not the lone culprit bud added to the problems. Lots of memories in this one for lots of bowlers and it was very nice once it was reinevated and never a poorly maintained center other than during the short AMF ownership.

By present condition, I was referring to MUCH more than the brick and mortar operation of USBC.  In the old days, ABC/WIBC had a lot more interaction with houses AND the bowlers.  The field reps were expected to BE in the field.  Poor maintenance also was often taken care of through the manner in which honor scores had to be checked.  Nothing pissed off a bowler more than losing an honor score because the proprietor failed to comply with basic rules...and back then, word spread and bowlers ELSEWHERE also got incensed when they heard about problems (Glenn Allison's second shift score with a Yellow Dot being the prime example).

Was that one of the centers Chuck Lande was involved with?  I remember when there was discussion a few years about him trying to get a few centers in the metroplex area.  And as I recall, he also was trying to do so coming from a relatively strong position of financial sense from his earlier career path...

One reason why bowling is going down, No awards for adult's with 200 or more averages, no 700 patches or pins, no recognition of any kind for a $20 sanction fee.  Most don't want to spend all that time from Sept to May in a bowling league.

Bowling is definitely in a decline. The number of lane beds continue to dwindle.

So many think the proprietors are getting rich but just the opposite is true.

There are many reasons for the decline but I think the USBC/ABC has been the least of the problem.

As far as lane scoring conditions go the owners provide what the vast majority of bowlers want, easy conditions. A very small pecentage of bowlers want harder conditions, such a small percentage it in many cases can't support leagues.
