Several weeks ago I saw a mother and her two kids (they looked around 6 and 9 year olds) living in their Van. I didn't have to ask, you just know, especially if you've experienced not having a home like I have. Plus, I saw them one other time in a different location.

It struck me on how we complain a lot about simple things in life. It struck me to know, that there are families laughing and enjoying themselves inside the bowling alley while this family is living in their van.

My son, being 13 told me he doesn't want to use his allowance money to buy the new Pokemon game even though he wants it so badly. He wants to donate it (turkey drive ended, but we can give it to the church who are feeding the hungry) - my boy just gave me hope about his generation. He will get that pokemon game for Christmas for sure. Even though he raises my blood pressure, he's a good kid. And I'm thankful for having a loving boy... and his baby sister, well I'm thankful she loves bowling hahaha.. and lastly, their mom, my old lady lol... she works hard as a nurse and even brings work home, but she finds time to cook, cleans, plays with the kids, take care of her mom who lives not far from us, and all that for us.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL ON BALLREVIEWS.COM!!B ;D 8)

Happy Thanksgiving Jay!

I'll be thankful AFTER Thanksgiving if I don't set the house on fire with the turkey fryer.  ;D

In no particular order:
I'm thankful I still have money to make charitable donations.
I'm thankful I can still bowl, even if it's nowhere near what I used to score.
I'm thankful I'm still married.
I'm thankful that most of my and my wife's retirement funds is not yet going for our healthcare.
I'm thankful I can still pay my property taxes here in NJ!!
I'm thankful for the friends I have.
I'm thankful I survived a year of combat in Viet Nam without getting wounded; just a couple of close calls.

I just made out checks for charity about a week ago, so that these organizations can do what your church is doing: Help feed the less fortunate, among other things:
Salvation Army, Community Food Bank, United Way, Red Cross, Disabled American Vets., etc.

Just be VERY, VERY careful  into what you or your investment counselor are putting your money. Keep a watchful eye on it. We trusted ours for 15 years and were lucky to get out with what we put in. That was 15 years of the counselor getting their yearly commission and basically playing with our money, while we got Zilch. Their quote: "Well, we said there was no guarantee!!"

I work on base with the military.  I'm thankful every time I go eat at the main cafeteria on base and I have all my limbs intact.  It's one thing to hear about the struggles.  It's another to truly see what it's like to be in your 20's and missing an arm or leg or both.

Xrayjay,
I sure you know this already, but I will state it anyway.
Do not under and circumstances be aggressive with all your investment monies.  That is the quickest way to lose everything.  Divide the risk associated with each investment between aggressive, moderate and low risk investments. Better to be safe than sorry.
Your seem to be young enough that overtime you should come out OK when your ready to retire.
Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving to you and all the members on BR.

Amen to that.

I work for a large hospital corporation that specializes in mental health services. We contract with the VA to provide services for some of these young men and women who come home and are no longer the same person.

The horrors of war can leave permanent scars. Some of which are very visible and some are not.

That's another one I had forgotten to be thankful for ---

I am thankful for the friends I've made here without ever meeting face to face.

Many of us have much to be grateful for.  Taking a few minutes to remember that will change our perspective on life (and bowling).

If you want to really feel good then donate some time this holiday season to a good charity or cause.  Donating money is important, but spending time with those who need help makes it more personal and leaves an impression on our minds that is not easily forgotten.

For example, go to a nursing home and just hold the hand and listen to a complete stranger tell you about their life and let them feel that "someone cares".   The day could easily come when we are the patient in that situation.  You'll get more out of it than the recipient.

I am thankful that I still have my parents alive and well. Dad is 89 and mom is 82. I can't tell you how much I love and respect them. I cherish every day that they are with me. Yes I have many other things that I am thankful for, but if it was not for them I would not be where I am. I hope everyone has a great day!
