Are you a Tipper???
« on: December 03, 2004, 10:51:22 AM »
I was just curious if anyone else does what I do.  When you go the a restaurant it is standard to tip 10% to 15%.  You are tipping for the service provided, correct?

Well,  I typically tip my proshop guy when he gets everything finished for me.  See, he works for the bowling alley and has many side "chores" other than drilling bowling balls.  He is very good at what he does but sometimes I have to wait a week longer than expected b/c he is busy doing other things.

Anyway, he did a blank drill, with inserts, reslugged my SCB, new inserts in the SCB, and 30 pieces of tape for $30.  That is a great deal, so I tipped him $10.

Do any of you tip??  If not, has it ever occured to you to do so??

My husband and I buy an average of 1 ball a month each, and I don't get any more of a discount than the guy that buys one ball every five years, so, no--I don't tip.  The work that Andrew had done for $30 would cost me about $75. I like the work my pro shop guy does does, so I'll stay with him, and order from him instead of on-line most of the time (I think that's my tip to him.)

I just picked up a couple of balls from my pro-shop.  Had one drilled with thumb slug and grips, had another resurfaced on the Haus.  He charged me $20.  He gives a lot of us regulars a break like that simply because we drop the balls off and leave a note telling him what we want done.  None of us are ever in a hurry so he does the work when he has the chance.  Refuses to take tips, says he works for the alley and that's the going rate for league bowlers.

Just before Christmas all of us get together and take up a collection, put it in an envelope and give it to the owner of the alley to pass on to him.  We usually collect between $400-$500.

Don't want to take a chance on him leaving.

I wonder if our proshop guy gets a Christmas Bonus.  This center appears to be making money hand over fist.

The difference is, you're paying for a product (the food) at a restaurant,

I don't think agree.  I can find something at ALMOST any restaurant that I could eat.  I tip based on service and service alone.  I don't care if the food was great. If I have to wait an hour for it, then that is poor service.  If my drink is constantly empty, then that is poor service.  If the food is great the service is poor, then the tip will be small.

I tip my pro shop guys all the time,...and give 'em a few bucks when I need to use any of their stuff,...bevel knife, sandpaper, polish, spinner or whatever, even if I do the work. I even buy the beers and cokes,..every once in a while just because. There's a few younsters that help out there, they do plug work, and cut downs, clean up etc,...I'll give them a ball every so often. Never hurts to be nice guy,....jim

I don't actually give my shop guy monetary tips, but I now and again buy him a beer, and once in a while "trade" him something else in addition to paying for work.  I don't think he'd accept a tip - maybe I should try it and see?

T = To
I = Insure
P = Prompt
S = Service

Being an "Old Bartender", I am in the habit of tipping very well in the service industry, especially for good service. That being said, I also "tip" my driller/fitters, and buy them a pop or beer as well.
