...or at least pretending to listen.

 to Senator

Thank you for your message regarding the reopening of California's bowling centers. I appreciate hearing from you as I share your concerns.

I co-signed a letter that was delivered to Governor Newsom today requesting that he re-evaluate the status of bowling centers under his "Blueprint for a Safer Economy" in order to aid in the responsible re-opening of an integral part of many local communities. The letter can be read at https://bates.cssrc.us/sites/default/files/201009_BowlingCenters.pdf.

Please know that I will continue to do what I can to reopen more of our state in a safe and responsible manner.

Sincerely,

PATRICIA C. BATES

Senator, 36th District

South Orange and North San Diego Counties

I'm working on finishing my degree at Berkeley for this year and probably next, so it might be a while before I'm bowling regularly again.

I will still take my group to Vegas for the USBC Open Championships, but I don't have time for leagues with work(job), my course work and research/writing my dissertation.

With all your life adventures, I'm almost afraid to ask what graduate degree you're pursuing.  ;)

I'm glad to hear you're still doing Nationals coordination. But given the most recent US outbreaks, I'm not sure Vegas is going to happen in 2021. At least not in the first half of the year. I have several friends who live in Vegas. Between their Covid stories and what I'm reading about the area, I'm not stepping foot there. That's just me and it might be an overreaction, but until there is a proven vaccine, no thanks.

Yea, the thought that it may not happen crossed my mind as well. Our dates are not until late June, so we will see.

I already had my MS(Computer Science) and my company offered to pay the cost if I wanted to take the last step, so I applied and got accepted.

There are a lot of days when I regret it. LOL

You and I both! Same profession, only BS instead of MS. While the pay is good, there have been times that I wish I hadn't gone into IT.

That's impressive to commit to a doctorate. Berkeley doesn't give those things away, so I know you're earning it. You'll reach the finish line.

After 35 years in IT, I threw in the towel and graduated to retirement. I'm pursuing post graduate studies in different ways to be lazy, and I'm getting high makes from those around me.  :)   It's a hard path, but someone has to do it......

I figure I good for another 12 years or so before I retire. I could retire now, but I enjoy my job and the people I work with. Of course, tomorrow might have a different look.

Of course, if California keeps going down it's current path, I might be back in Alabama way before the 12 years have passed.

You have the best of both worlds if you enjoy your work and also have the opportunity to expand through education.

Kidding aside, retirement is great. I have a lot of post-work goals mapped out, and many have been given the "check" mark. But there is a saying I heard somewhere (maybe a cheesy movie  :) ) that basically said life is what happens as you're busy making plans. I've found a lot of truth in that. I had planned to make a big push in Senior PBA tournament bowling, but Covid in California has put a big wrench in things. I haven't hardly touched a ball in 7 months and a lot of the drive I used to have is gone. Maybe when I can finally shoe up again, the fire will return.

Let's hope California returns to action before our industry is screwed. At least there are some signs of life in NorCal.

According to the CDC, that 210,000 number is really only 12,600:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/cdc-94percent-of-covid-19-deaths-had-underlying-medical-conditions/ar-BB18wrA7

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/cdc-94-of-covid-related-deaths-have-underlying-medical-conditions/ar-BB18zmBJ

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/live-updates/coronavirus/?id=72721768

Following up on this, according to the CDC, of the 233,187 deaths attributed to "Covid", the actual causes of death are as follows:

87,000 patients died from bacterial pneumonia and influenza
17,000 died from chronic respiratory diseases
26,000 died from adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by bacteria (i.e. bacteria introduced from wearing a mask)
44,000 patients died from hypertension not related to Covid
51,000 patients died from heart attacks

Some of these deaths had multiple causes so there was some overlap

Oh, and here are Gov. Newsom's rules for Thanksgiving gatherings:

Attendance

Gatherings that include more than three households are prohibited. This includes everyone present, including hosts and guests. Remember, the smaller the number of people, the safer.
Keep the households that you interact with stable over time. By spending time with the same people, risk of transmission is reduced. Participating in multiple gatherings with different households or groups is strongly discouraged.
The host should collect names of all attendees and contact information in case contact tracing is needed later.
2. Gather outdoors

Gatherings that occur outdoors are significantly safer than indoor gatherings. All gatherings must be held outside. Attendees may go inside to use restrooms as long as the restrooms are frequently sanitized.
Gatherings may occur in outdoor spaces that are covered by umbrellas, canopies, awnings, roofs, and other shade structures provided that at least three sides of the space (or 75%) are open to the outdoors.
A gathering of no more than three households is permitted in a public park or other outdoor space, even if unrelated gatherings of other groups up to three households are also occurring in the same park or other outdoor space. If multiple such gatherings are occurring, mixing between group gatherings is not allowed. Additionally, multiple gatherings of three households cannot be jointly organized or coordinated to occur in the same public park or other outdoor space at the same time — this would constitute a gathering exceeding the permitted size.
3. Don’t attend gatherings if you feel sick or are in a high-risk group

Anyone with any COVID-19-like symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, night sweats, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, muscle or body aches, headaches, confusion, or loss of sense of taste/smell), must stay home and not come into contact with anyone outside their household.
Anyone who develops COVID-19 within 48 hours after attending a gathering should notify the other attendees as soon as possible regarding the potential exposure.
People at higher risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 (such as older adults and people with chronic medical conditions) are strongly urged not to attend any gatherings.
4. Practice physical distancing and hand hygiene at gatherings

For any gatherings permitted under this guidance, the space must be large enough so that everyone at a gathering can maintain at least a six-foot physical distance from others (not including their own household) at all times.
Seating must provide at least six feet of distance (in all directions — front-to-back and side-to-side) between different households.
Everyone at a gathering should frequently wash their hands with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. A place to wash hands or hand sanitizer must be available for participants to use.
Shared items should not be used during a gathering. As much as possible, any food or beverages at outdoor gatherings must be in single-serve disposable containers. If providing single-serve containers is not possible, food and beverages must be served by a person who washes or sanitizes their hands frequently, and wears a face covering. Self-serve items from communal containers should not be used.
5. Wear a face covering to keep the coronavirus from spreading

When gathering, face coverings must be worn in accordance with the California Department of Public Health guidance, unless an exemption is applicable.
People at gatherings may remove their face coverings briefly to eat or drink as long as they stay at least six feet away from everyone outside their own household, and put their face covering back on as soon as they are done with the activity.
Face coverings can also be removed to meet urgent medical needs (for example, to use an asthma inhaler, take medication, or if feeling light-headed).
6. Keep it short

Gatherings should be two hours or less. The longer the duration, the risk of transmission increases.
7. Rules for singing, chanting and shouting at outdoor gatherings

Singing, chanting, shouting and physical exertion significantly increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission because these activities increase the release of respiratory droplets and fine aerosols into the air. Because of this, singing, chanting and shouting are strongly discouraged, but if they occur, the following rules and recommendations apply:
Instrumental music is allowed as long as the musicians maintain at least six-foot physical distancing. Musicians must be from one of the three households. Playing of wind instruments (any instrument played by the mouth, such as a trumpet or clarinet) is strongly discouraged.
All people who are singing or chanting should wear a face covering at all times while singing or chanting, including anyone who is leading a song or chant. Because these activities pose a very high risk of COVID-19 transmission, face coverings are essential to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets and fine aerosols;
People who are singing, shouting, chanting, or exercising are strongly encouraged to maintain physical distancing beyond six feet to further reduce risk.
People who are singing or chanting are strongly encouraged to do so quietly (at or below the volume of a normal speaking voice).

First of all the CDC clarified the confusion caused by their original statement. There is overwhelming evidence that most of the 225,000+ deaths from covid-19 occurred with individuals who were either elderly and/or had compromised immune systems to begin with. Covid-19 put additional stress on their immune systems, resulting in their deaths. That's not surprising. Most illnesses, such as cancer and diabetes, by themselves,
are often not the sole cause of death. Instead, most people with such diseases succumb from secondary causes (like pneumonia, cardiac arrest, etc.) caused by the additional stress these diseases place on the vital organs of our bodies. This is certainly no surprise. Covid-19 is no different.

In addition, there is absolutely not a shred of proof that wearing a face mask causes the wearer to contract a bacterial (or any other infection). In fact, the evidence shows precisely the opposite--- wearing a face mask saves lives.
Conspiracy groups like Q-Anon jumped on the CDC's initial post and ran with it. They never pass up an opportunity to deny science, proof, or facts in order to promote their bizarre claims. If we have any chance whatsoever of emerging from this pandemic, it will only come when otherwise smart and reasonable folks reject such unsubstantiated claims and conspiracy theories. We will never return to any semblance of normalcy until we do. Our lives and our economy depend on us doing precisely that.

As long as folks continue to refuse to wear a mask, refuse social distancing, the longer it's going to be before we emerge from this crisis. That's a guarantee. How many more lives are we willing to go by the wayside? How many more of our citizens have to die alone in hospitals around the country from a virus that has a mortality rate 20 times higher than influenza ( a well established fact, by the way)?  How many more businesses will shutter, including our local bowling centers?  How many more jobs will be lost?

Until and if, a vaccine arrives on the scene, wear a mask. Practice social distancing. The sooner we all do, the sooner we can get our economy back on track and the more lives that will be saved.

The CDC did not try to clarify their statements, they actually doubled down on them.  Examples given were a person that had tested positive (which is not the same thing as having Covid) died of a heart attack it was ruled a Covid death. It was even stated that if someone died in a car accident and tested positive during the autopsy it was ruled a Covid death.

You need to go back to Fauci's 2008 whitepaper on the 1918 epidemic where he specifically states that a percentage of those deaths were from secondary bacteria from wearing masks.

If you're waiting for a Covid vaccine to go bowling you will likely never bowl again. Covid is a coronavirus, as is influenza and the common cold and where are those vaccines?
