Can a bowler’s style affect how they perceive the lanes?

I’ve know bowlers who felt a house was seldom the same from week to week. One week they would thing the lanes were dry, the next week slick, and everything in between.

However I never felt I saw that much variation in the lanes. I seldom saw more than a couple of board’s difference through the year.

While I’m not a cranker I do throw a decent ball but I don’t try to cover a lot of boards.

The bowlers talking about the lane differences were all higher rev players who tended to hook the lane and used more aggressive equipment.

I’m presuming that the bigger hook player games magnify the differences. So that what I perceived as 2 boards difference they might look at as 5 boards or more difference.

 

 

This week in my league was a perfect example of what Sawbones is talking about.  Out of 10 righty bowlers, 8 guys were slow speed, high rev players playing deep inside.  Two were throwing plastic (XXXLs) on 2nd shift conditions.  I was one of the 2 guys with higher speed.

By the end of the 2nd game, I couldn't keep my ball right of the head pin, mainly because all of the oil had been pushed up or dried out.  If there were a couple of leftys bowling, or less plastic being used, or more direct lines being played (like mine), or any combination of these, the transition would have been different and would have required a different adjustment, as is the case most weeks.
