Another question!

I RARELY buy Used balls! I have in the past but I have given all of them away after a few games. I question SCRIBING and learned that this was NOT UNUSUAL .. although I have seen the scribe lines TO DEEP.

Now I've been seeing SALE BALLS where one of the finger holes is drilled touching the PIN.

I was always under the impression this was a NO-NO and the results would effect the BALL ROLL.

Am I correct or is this another thing that I have been misinformed on?

I don''t like the scribing that some driller''s do but they say that the scribing make''s the drilling more accurate but it also kinda destroy''s the ball too if it''s too deep.

As for the finger hole touching the pin, this is a no-no especially if you have to warranty the ball. Anything within an inch is not reccomended. I''ve seen a few people with the pin just barely drilled into, 3 of the 5 people who has this on their ball had the pin crack out but that was it so far.

As Brunsmike said, it will void the warranty and makes the ball more likely to develop a crack. It does not, however, affect the roll or performance of the ball in any way.

If the driller had a brain in his head he would move the drilling slightly so that he could drill the whole pin out which does not void the warranty. it will not change the roll or intention of the layout one bit. He has just left his customer or himself with a warranty problem.

a few months back a hammer ball rep drilled my buddies widow sting. ring finger hole right through the pin. ball rolls great for him.

Like others have said the big no-no of drilling into or near a pin is that it voids the ball warranty.

The pin is a weak spot in the coverstock and cracks can form between it and any hole drilled near it. I have seen this happen and if it does then the ball can break out in that area.

Warranties used to be voided if you drilled within 1/2 inch of the pin. I haven't look in recent years.

Performance wise I don't think it is an issue until the ball breaks out.

Quite a while back (when I first came to NC) a driller made a finger hole right through a pin on a brand new ball for me. He claimed it was not unusual .. at the time I was not aware of WARRANTY issues. When I threw the ball it went absolutely STRAIGHT. Another ball I gave away with 2 games on it.

I guess that's where I walked away thinking the drilling effected the rolling.

Thanks Dave .. honestly DIDN'T KNOW that .. suppose I stretch this question .. if you buy a USED BALL where one of the holes is TOUCHING the pin .. can it be plugged?

I guess this whole thing is similar to SCRIBING .. it's OK to scribe since it helps to be PERFECT and it's OK to drill pins if you don't worry about Warranties.

Both procedures have NO EFFECT on the user. Thanks

Just having the pin drilled out didn't hurt the ball reaction.  But it did set a specific layout (pin to PAP distance, mass bias location, drill angle, pin height, etc.) that might not have been good for you.  Or the ball choice might not have suited your style.  --  JohnP

John .. don't know if you remember the original AZO bowling balls (I'm sure you do) .. they had TWO pins .. can't remember exactly which ball it was I know I had three of them .. one of them is where the pin was drilled into .. the other two balls worked fairly well for me .. the one with the pin drilling just went the way you would want a SPARE BALL to go .. Thanks !!

I wasn't drilling when the original AZO balls came out, by the time I started they were still AZO but only had one pin.  I have read a little about them but have never drilled one.  --  JohnP
