Bill Hall BTM article
« on: March 30, 2004, 08:29:17 PM »
In this month’s BTM Bill Hall has an article on how lane patterns breakdown.

In that article he stated that because of all the right handed power players chewing up the pattern with their lay down point being on the left side of the lane that lefties were forced to learn to throw the down the boards shot on the outside of the lane.

If that is true then, why have 90% of the lefties over the last 40 years all thrown that exact same shot. Right handed power players have only been getting that deep the last 10 or 15 years.

The true answer is that the down in shot is the best shot for most of the lefties. The playing characteristics of the left side, being smoother with less play and normally more oil than the right side is conducive to the down and in shot.

i dont know. im left handed and usually put the ball down on the right side of the lane if im playin deep. usually between 12-17 depending on the oil. most the other lefties dont get near my line in league. most are up and in or small swing to gutter. i seem to score better inside, its easier to get to the pocket playin gutter but ball seems to burn up and not hit the greatest, plus playing deep inside for me has a more forgiving line to play.

I will see Bill on saturday and ask for a detailed answer for you on his thoughts. He has forgotten more than 95 percent of us know about bowling and i am amazed after every 2 hour session i spend with him of, off the wall stuff that sounds nuts until he shows me why what he told me is true with real on lane instruction. He is a great coach and now a great friend and he has recently been motivating me because i am getting burned out on bowling and leagues. Do your self a favor and go to his clinics if they ever visit your area you will not feel bad about your spent there.

Growing up the outside line was my bread and butter shot. I never had to play inside of second arrow for most house shots. When I got to college and watched many righties spraying the ball from 4th and 5th arrow out, I learned why it was important sometimes to move inside of 4th arrow for better carry and to get a fresh line on the lanes. When we would bowl in Atlantic City over Christmas vacation you would bowl in conditions where every game you may move to a pair where straight up 3 works, then next game play 25-15, then the following game a small 10 to 6 shot... so as a result I am not afraid to play anywhere on the lane, even if I'm the only wrongsider on the pair.
