Another release question....
« on: June 02, 2005, 03:16:30 AM »
Last night after leagues, I started to throw the ball without using my Robby's Revs wrist guard.  I noticed that I didn't have as many revs on the ball as before, and my accuracy didn't seem quite the same.  Has anybody else had these type of results when not using a wrist guard?  I am going to pick up a wrist support, since it still isn't as strong as it used to be.  My main question is how do I get more revs on the ball without the guard?  Somneone told me last night that it would take time to get the revs back, is this true?  I'm just curious & concerned, as I want to try not to use the guard for the rest of the summer, as I don't feel it's necessary anymore.

Any questions or suggestions are appreciated.

Try a Mongoose wrist support ... positions the hand well and keep the wrist straight without being bulky or cumbersome.

I used to use a wrist guard when I first started off bowling, but the pro shop guy said that it weakens your wrist strength over time. So I went to a bowling glove, that gave me the hook that I lost form getting rid of the wrist guard. Here is the one that I used.

I have had the exact opposite experience..., I purchased a Robby's Revs wrist support once about 2 years ago, It greatly improved my accuracy and i was able to get a better, more consistant release, but after about 1 year I took it off and had better accuracy and more revs than I did with the thing on!!! I will never put one on again, I use a glove at times but otherwise I think that if you work out with your wrist and fore arms you will have a better release and such

Good Luck

It's probably just me, or not being used to not wearing the wrist guard that threw off my accuracy last night.

The support I was thinking of picking up was one that just goes around you wrist, for support.  I used to wear a glove a long time ago, but didn't see any increased results, plus when I got rid of it, some of the grip somehow melted onto my pointer finger, and didn't come off for about a week & a half.

It has been about 3 years since I started wearing a wrist guard.  I've tried throwing without it a couple of times, but my wrist hurt at that point.  Last night it felt pretty good without it though, so I'm not going to use it & see what happens.  Not to sound repetitive, but does it take some time to get the revs back without the guard?

I keep a Robbys Revs around in case my hand doesn't "feel" right.  I can always count on it for feedback if my wrist is doing something funny.  Otherwise, I do get better revs without mine on.  I will bring out the wrist brace on really dry lanes, as it's an easy way for me to take some stuff off the ball.

I've always been told you'll get better revs w/o a support as it always you to get the wrist into a better "cupped' position.

to answer your question, it varies from one individual to another.  During the urethane days, I used the Cobra.  Since my return (after 10+ yr layoff) I learned you can get just as much on the ball without a device.  It is my understanding the purpose of a wrist device is for training (i.e. hand position etc.)  Once you become accustomed, you're to try bowling without it.  In your case, it seems as though the muscles involved (which the device provided added support) have to strengthen.  So only time and practice will tell.  But do not be consumed with putting 'a lot' on the ball by sacrificing other facets of your game.  You will eventually learn what's comfortable for you.

i used to wear a robbys back when i had a problem turning the ball early or topping the ball. when i corrected i stopped using it. i prefer not to use one now. i can go from an end-over-end roll to a ball with some side turn quick and easy without it.
