I'm quitting....
« on: October 26, 2004, 08:46:57 AM »
with using finger grips.  I can just hear all the "Ah darn, thought he was finally leaving"....

The UI I just received used, had no grips, and while it didn't fit me, i liked the feel MUCH better than with grips in.  Less wear and tear on my fingers.  Not to mention i won't have to replace grips every few months.  Just thought I'd share my decision to go with no-grips.

I think more people should try this.  It's not for everyone, but it seems to me, that it's implanted in new bowler's minds, that they HAVE to get finger grips.  But, some people would be better off without them.....

Warning! Warning!
Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

Try it for a while with one ball, over several ocassions to see how well your fingers adapt to it, over the long haul. Include at least one long-ish practice session of 8+ games, to see how well your fingers AND hand feel afterwards, an hour later and a day later.

Don't jump to conclusions. YOu'll save aggravation and many possible back and forth changes.

No, I know Charlest, I'm redrilling a ball tommorrow with no grips, to see how it actually feels after use.  Well, i was gonna redrill it anyways, but this is another good reason.

But, I think i'll have to do it anyways, because the grips are causing too much wear on my fingers.

Grips in and of themselves do not cause wear on the fingers, but poor fits do.

Get a second opinion on yours, i would.

You know, it IS possible that I just don't like them.  Ever thought of that?  Is it just that hard to possibly accept the fact that I dont have to do what is "standard" and what feels more comfortable for me....

What I posted isn't the whole story and everything behind it you know...there are other reasons.  I suppose I make it seem like this is spur of the moment...actually, I have been thinking about doing this for a long time.

Isn't the point of grips to, well, give you grip?  Well my fingers naturally have grip on them, and I find that i hang up in the grips whereas with no grips, that extra friction isn't created.

I'm not really sure what I'd be getting a second opinion about?  A second opinion on what feels better to me?  Now, I'm not criticizing you, I'm just wondering what you meant by that.  The wear and tear wasn't the main reason for me wanting to switch.  It is more just about comfort.

If i have to choose discomfort to be successful at bowling, seems like I'll need a new hobby.

Wow, i really should have never said anything about wear and tear, it's what everyone focuses on, amazing....I don't know, maybe it's those stupid powerlifts causing too much forward?

I should say this as well.  I hang up REALLY bad with the rubber of the inserts.  I need something that isn't designed to cause friction, which would be no grips, or as bob said putting finger slugs.

As for hurting my hand, well it won't be any worse if i have correct pitches, since i don't hit up on the ball (contrary to captain hit-up BK), my fingers just (try to) come out.

BUT like i said, I'm drillin up a ball w/ no grips (and having my span remeasured an pitches checked), so we'll see how it goes.

I have a teammate that went no-grips toward the end of last season.  She had one ball drilled no-grips and then after about a month, got a new spare ball drilled the same way.

What works for some doesn't work for others.  I can't fathom not having inserts in my equipment because I find them very comfortable.

Good luck with the switch, Andy

Bob, I'm only going to redrill my Power groove or something without grips, then use it for a week or two of league and practice, and see how it is.  If it turns out to be bad, I guess I'll have to get vice grips or something.

Andy,

Go ahead and try a ball without lifts. It's the right thing to do, for you, at this point in time. if they fit right, for a long time and under all conditions, then you won;thave to worry about inserts any more. But ...

Bob is right: power lifts and the wrong angles can be causing that problem VERY EASILY! Because soft vinyl inserts are so grippy, they can expose faults in the wrong angles (backward, forward, side ways) and size. You should NOT be sticking and your fingers should not be suffering excess wear and soreness.

I used to love the soft Contour Power grips, but I have recently found that Vise Grips feel better because they are not as soft, but one would never call them firm or hard. They are just slightly less soft. I've even found back pitch beneficial.

Easy does it, kid.  You stated that your fingers suffered "wear n tear".  I am of the opinion that any proper grip should not cause this- inserts being used or not.

That being said, I hope the new feel works out well for you.  Good luck.

I just have one ball without grips right now - tired of replacing them all the time - and the main thing I have noticed is how much cleaner I am coming out of the ball.  I find it is much easier to get out of the ball when shooting the right corner, and I have less "pulls" on the first shots compared to using grips. So far I haven't decided to plug and redrill, but as I replace stuff in my bag, I think grips will not be put in anything I drill going forward...

I've had both....first used grips in the early 80's...right now I've got a couple both with and without. What I've found is that since I've changed my thumb reverse to 3/8, my fingers feel better in both. I've used 1/4 under (either in the grip or without) and I think that added reverse has eased the pressure on my fingers...for me this translates into less wear...

I get about 25 more revs per minute with grips, and i like the feel better. If you are having trouble with grips hurting, they might be too small. If no grips works though, go for it!

WEll, I dropped off the Power groove at the shop to redrill (I was gonna anyways, dont have a heart attack ).  I'm supposed to pick it up friday, i'll have practice then, and league the next day.

Right now, I'm working on a Before/After video, showing the benefits of having your correct span/pitches/fit.  It will be quite awesome, if I get to do what I plan to.  Hehe.

Redrill for span, and pitches (hence the thing about a proper fit).

I hope i'll be able to successfully create my video....it will destroy that fluffer nick and his precious!
