How many don't use a "spare" ball?
« on: December 06, 2003, 05:46:31 AM »
I hear talk about people putting arsenals together, like "4 balls plus spare ball."

How many of us here use one ball during a game, strikes/spares regardless?  I always figured that why waste money on a spare ball if I can make spares anyway?  That gives me room for another "real" ball if I would need it.

What I normally do is whatever ball I start bowling a series with, I use it exclusively, be it middle-pin spares, sleepers, and right corners.  If I happen to change strike balls at some point, I will most likely keep using the first ball I had for left/right corners.  I ALWAYS use the strike ball/strike line to shoot spares in the middle of the lane and buckets/sleepers.

I never have and probably never will use another ball to shoot at spares. Every ball that I carry with me I can make go straight on any condition.

I do not use a spare ball anymore.  I shoot spares better using my strike ball.  I used to use a urethane ball but I tend to get a different feel if I use another ball.  I did not like the inconsistant feeling so I just started using the strike ball for spares again.  Average is actually a little better this because of it..

Well, I use a spare ball on the right side, unless I've got double wood.
I've been working a little on using it on the left side, too, but so far, I'm not thrilled with the results.

no spare ball here. I just chuck my my hard and straight about 28mph at most of my spares.

i've shot at spares both ways----plastic and non-plastic. plastic gives me more margin of error. especially when the backends and outside is very dry.

I went through and read these posts and I used to use my strike ball for my spares (killed it on the 10 pin) but found out most of the time I was using THS when I shot my left handed spares.  I discovered this when I bowled on a sport shot and it was drier than usual and I was in big trouble missing more than usual.  I had no clue where to stand on the various patterns of which I had no experience on.

It has taken a long time almost 2 years now before I'm beginning to feel comfortable with plastic on all of my spares.  I certainly understand why the pros use plastic.  You're covered on all of the patterns and you know it will go pretty straight unless you really pull it or cup your wrist which I don't do on spare shots.

Now, the next time I go to a sport shot I will be more prepared as my plastic won't vary from one place to another.
