Generic Equipment Question
« on: December 14, 2008, 10:19:03 PM »
Hi all, been a while...
Well, my brother is giving me the itch to pick up my stuff and throw a few games.  I must admit chatting with him has spurred some interest again

Anyhow ... I have 2 Morich Hercules in my bag right now.  I'm NOT going to spend any money on a new ball, or definately don't want to, but I was wondering if there has been THAT MUCH change in everything in the past 3 seasons that would render my Herc's 'useless'?

Does this question make sense?

In other words, would the Morich Hercules be "too" outdated?

Thanks...

Nothing drastic has changed in equipment in several years.  Some leagues are putting down higher volume/longer oil patterns than in past years, but not all.  And you'll probably see drier conditions for open bowling anyway.  You'll be fine.

Jeff,

No nothing new other than if your house changed it's amount of oil used to render your Herc's useless.

We just buy new equipment cuz we're looking for the Magic pill.    It keeps the bowling economy going.

I am looking at MOTIV just because it's a new/old company made in Muskegon, MI and MI can use all the help they can get.

Thanks Dan, to be honest, I can't see having an issue either really.  I have 2 of them, and they set up for different situations, so a fresh surface, and I should be fine.

Interesting to see what 3 seasons off will be like. You know? The mental side of it, thinking differently, wondering if my release would be the same, better, etc, etc....anyhow, thanks for the insight.

I know, kind of a stupid post, but...

Definitively not! I use a 2000 Revolution Renegade as my go-to ball for medium-dry to medium conditions, and this old wacky (and ugly) piece keeps suprising me... Just bowled my official high game of 268 with it last week in my annual club tournament, and it got me into the finals in my player's class, together with the highest qualification result (2367 through 12 games, about +100 in front of the 2nd place) of my class.

They just call them Hybrids now, so you'll be fine. It's the world of retro equipment. Welcome back.

I know the Herc was a hybrid, I'm just looking at the possibility of it being outdated, but I really don't see that.

Hi Jeff,

A_P_K threw a 300 with the new Hercules I got for him, at his request, from Ebay last season. Like Scott said, more depends on what your house is doing oil-wise. I'm using the Blue/Green Centaur, Storm Razor Wire, Revolution Renegade (like Dizzy), Power Groove Pearl and Solid more than anything else. I think the youngest ball in that list is 5 years old. If anything, the new balls are too strong unless you have high ball speed or lower rev rate.

Hey Jeff,

I wouldn't say it's outdated bud. There still has to be "x" amount of dry or friction present on the lane or we wouldn't get any or enough ball reaction.  Then they also can't over oil a lane because they won't get the ball to return or too much oil will still push into pindecks causing out of ranges (mechanics nightmare so that doesn't happen much).

As with any piece, there will always be a time and place.  I guess some of the changes in equipment since you've been gone is that most manufacturers have shied away from particle for heavy oil (back to resin covers). We now also have some balls with cores over 7lbs (Morich and Track) which may/will lead to cores being heavier than half the ball weight and that should provide for some interesting reactions and layouts.

Glad to see your ideals haven't changed much...
