Any interesting NEW league ideas out there?
« on: November 29, 2012, 12:32:58 PM »
Ok so I'm just wondering if anyone is running any type of new league formats out there right now that made a difference in the growth of your league.  Currently we are bowling a 30 point system, we change patterns every 4 weeks.  It's a league filled with decent bowlers.  We are at a stand still with league growth and I'm looking for ideas to help the league (something different).  So let me know what is out there that created some excitement.Thanks.

Do a Draft league...

High average guys are the team captains and use a snake draft..

The scratch league i am in did this and every team is very evenly matched up.. This year we have 8 / 3 man teams, but i am sure next year we will get a full 16 teams..

We did talk about that but a lot of the teams have been bowling together for many years.

I bowled a league once where you had four man teams and bowled three games of Baker then bowled your regular three games for individual points. The Baker made it interesting.

The draft sounds interesting...but there are a few people I could not bowl with at my local houses...no way lol. But I guess if you're drafting odds are u won't get stuck with anyone you specifically do not want to bowl with.

I suggest every year that we make anyone of my leagues a ball league...cuz honestly who doesn't want new equipment!   But it never flies...oh well

There was mention on another thread (can't remember which one) of a format where you bowled against entire league. Point system was based on how you placed against all teams. For a 16 team league, highest team game on 1st game was 16 points with lowest team game worth 1 point. Same for game 2, 3 and total pins. The person who posted said it increased participation dramitically.

My local house is experimenting with a league called the "any time" league. It is an individual league that you bowl one time per week. There is no league day. The league week starts on Wednesday and ends the following Tuesday at midnight. The bowler comes in anytime there is open lanes to bowl his or her league series. The house matches the scores for opponents and the following week pays out prizes from the previous week based upon the highest game and highest series, plus there is a payout at the end of the year.

Idea is a person is not married to the same time and same night every week. However, this house also has numerous high school teams (4) and the time after work and before league can be limited during the high school season, although the center has 50 lanes so someone can find a pair MOST of the time.

Would you bowl in this league not knowing what your opponent was bowling on (conditions) and not seeing your only opponent bowl? Plus, when you come in to bowl, the conditions could range from fresh to really torn up if you get behind a high school pair, or even worse, the college team that also bowls at the house.

Thoughts?

Had a thought about a 16 week "league" that pays out every week but also includes a points system to encourage bowlers to show up every week.  It would be singles competition.

Handicap to your preference....scores are high in my area so i like 90% of 220...makes everyone show up to cash and gives a good opportunity for different cashers each week.

3 games, pays 1 in 4.  1 in 5 of the cashers (ie top 4 of 20 cashers from 40 bowlers that night) bowl two more games with pins carrying over for the remaining place money for that week.

Point values awarded to all spots regardless of cashing...points prizes awarded at the end of the league.

So its basically like a mini-tourney series that runs weekly in a league time slot with weekly payouts.  I think it would be fun.

This year, we're running a match point singles league within our team league. Every week is a position week, which means that #1 always plays #2, 3 plays 4, and so on. It's voluntary, but 90% of the league is participating. The cost is an extra 5 dollars a week. At the end of the season, the prize money is spread down to the bottom, so everyone gets something back. Ours is scratch (like our team league), but it could certainly be done using handicap.

Nobody gets rich, but it adds an extra element of competition, and everyone seems to really like it. I'm sure it will help with retention next year.

we are running a league where the finals are a bracket style where everyone in the league gets a chance to win the league and of course the $$$.

It really is starting to pick up steam around here.  last year we had only 8 teams and this year we lost like 3 teams from people changing jobs or leaving the area and still went up to 10 teams.  kinda fun at the end of the year when everyone still has a chance.
