I started out bowling without a thumb, but quickly realized my consistency sucked. Plus, on a dry lane, the ball is impossible to control. Try getting a ten pin...

I actually think it helped me learn a good release though. Once I adjusted to using a thumb-in drilling (my first ball), I was way more consistent, and could actually pick up the 10 pin!

to each his own, but for me, thumb-in has a lot more potential.

Maybe we should ask Mike Miller. Here's a guy who bowled on tour for years, WITHOUT much success, if any. He was just your average run of the mill fudger.

Then one day, he decided that he needed "more ball" to compete with the guys on tour. So he took his thumb out of the ball and started revving it up like the rest of the pros'.

Mike had the ability to cup and throw the ball, using only his 2 fingers, WITH a great deal of consistancy. Lo and behold, he then started cashing on tour and winning titles.

Many PBA bowlers couldn't believe what was happening, and became very jealous..!! They started to complain about the weights in the ball, how now you must not have more than 1 oz. of top weight, the lane conditions are too easy, there's too much oil on the lanes, ect..ect...ect...

And so, all the complaining/jealousy lead to what we have today. The constant changing of conditions, less oil, sport crap conditions, ect...ect...ect... =:^D

I have an acquaintance that is a tremendous no thumb bowler and thumb bowler.

When he needs more hood he goes no thumb and when he needs less thumb he goes thumb.

He is also a tremendous sandbagger and will be stringing strikes on oil and then stay the same place and put the thumb in to throw bucket after bucket.

He looks great either way.  He's been to Kegel and they love his form.

I've seen him throw 750+s both ways and just goes no thumb when he needs more movement in back.  Only 3 to 4 more boards but it gives him loads more carry when that is the shot!

Referring to the point about there not being many succesful nothumbers, I wonder how many 'serious' bowlers have tried it, without being heavily advised against it by his peers/coach.

Could it be that the reason there are so few succesful nothumbers is because nobody is teaching these nothumbers how to bowl, they basically have to figure everything out by themselves?

Around here, nobody takes nothumbing seriously, I don't think anyone would ever consider it as a serious solution. I've seen one guy do it for more than a couple of throws, though I haven't seen him competing in anything but league atm.

I've seen some two handed nothumbers do well though, most notably Osku Palermaa and Jason Belmonte. If those two can do it, then why not anyone else?

Why no versatility? Surely you can adjust axis rotation/tilt, speed and balls like everyone else, even revrate to some extent (even better with a twohanded release).

I think that people arnt consistent because they are never given the chance to get good enough to become consistent. They are told they will never be good with no thumbs. Im sure if someone got USED to it, like someone who is a good 3 finger bowler, they could be very succesful at it!

I've known a few people who hurt their thumb, and once it healed, it hurt too much to put their thumb in the ball, or they simply weren't able to any longer.  They couldn't get the timing of lefthanded bowling down, so they simply bowl righty no thumb.

I could be wrong, but I think Sag Valley had a multi time all american that bowled no thumb.

No thumb bowling is the future of bowling. Therre's nothing wrong with bowling no-thumb and quite frankly, it's better..!!

The only purpose of using your thumb is to hold onto the ball. It doesn't give you any more revs, it actually takes revs off the ball. You'll never hang up in the ball. There is no need for tape, so you'll never have thumb problems. That's a HUGE advantage for many bowlers.

Siniak's point is a good one, and a VALID one. Yes, if no thumb bowling was taught by someone, we would learn how to do it properly, better, and at a younger age. It would also be more accepted.

Jabroni, the only reason you don't like it is because you get beat on a house shot (normal shot) by no thumbers. As a matter of fact, most bowlers will get beat on a NORMAL SHOT (house shot) by no thumbers and higher rev players.

This is why you want tougher conditions, because you can't beat the talented bowlers, who KNOW HOW TO THROW THE BALL WITH POWER/REVS..!! =:^D

I watched Jason Belmonte and other no thumbers in the las vegas tournaments most have good control, and use a thumb on spare shots like 10 pins. I have a friend who low average is 226 no thumbing and shoots all spares 3 finger with plastic. He is as good as any amatuer out there and bowls doubles with David Haynes all the time so unless he is good i doubt David Haynes would want him, so to generalize there are some great no thumbers just like there are alot of crappy 3 finger bowlers including me on that count.

I got a friend he is on here someimes hat is a no thumb cause he has hurt his finger and ith his thumb in puts to much pressure on the one finger. We don't bowl on a normal walled house shot and he has won a few tournaments and shot many 279+ games and got his first 300 this year and we were 3rd in illinois state tournament southern division

okay, how about the "Walter Ray Williams Jr. 2 fingered spare ball" from years ago?  Anyone ever tried or still use it?

I'll be the first to admit, I tried it, successfully at first but soon learned how to simply break my wrist to throw a straight ball.
