Attitudes!!

When you're bored with leagues, you've simply outgrown them or have other areas of passion in your life.

I keep trying to get my son to quit leagues and move on, I feel they are keeping him back and wasting his time and money.

My son wants me to spend 24 hours away from this board, he sees me over doing it.

Some of the guys he bowls with try to give him advice. He doesn't mind if they give him reason to try it or they are better than him. He'll consider advice from others but won't try everyone's.

The locals are full ot techno advice but none really seem to work on their mental attitude.

Last night he had perfect example of a good night.

Fellow team mate who sometimes irks him with unwanted advice. Good bowler but doesn't always grasp my son's thought.

Last night after 2 games, son had a 508. He bowled a 25* last game. Other guys total for night was less than a 520 ( he also is 200 bowler, having a bad night)

My point isn't bragging, The point being, he needs mental training not bowling tech advice. The day before he shot like crap at another house. He also needs to get better on a different shot. One house was dry, other oily.

All summer he has stuggled at the new house, except when he practices there he can bowl his big games. I think he is trying too hard to impress them at the new house as a guy to respect.

Focused For Bowling by Dean Hinitz is a good start to learning the mental game if your son enjoys reading.

Quote from Robert Smith of the PBA, regarding bowling: "If you're not willing to change, you're not willing to improve."

How do you know if something will make you better unless you try?

This is a very grey area.  So many unqualified coaches out there, so who do you listen to?  Growing up as a youngster, I never knew who to listen to.  It really seems like a crapshoot until you find out who the really good coaches are.

One thing I have learned is that lessons have more of an impact when you discover the lessons yourself.  Rather than teaching people how to bowl, sometimes teaching people how to learn will produce a better student of the game.

Great point Brian, I only give pointers to novices. First one is simply watch what you hit, if you hit a strike try to repeat that. Really basic. Then if I go farther one of my last words is listen to different folks and remember which ones gave you advice that worked for you personally.

I also sometimes suggest they come out when the scratch league is there simply to watch and see what the better bowlers are doing.
