Old Urethane Bowling Balls
« on: February 17, 2004, 06:39:16 AM »
Ok guys and gals, when I started bowling Urethane bowling balls were old news and reactive was just coming out.  My lanes are dry and so far all the light oil balls that I have gotten are too much.  My plastic XXXL gets in the pocket but does not carry good at all(too many pocket splits).  What are some of the good Urethane balls from the days of old?  I need brand names and ball names. Good points and bad.  Thanks

tell you what nothing hits like a urethane hammer.  I agree what you said about the xxxl.  Dont try the xxl that damn pearl urethane out hooked half my resin balls.  But it all depends on ball speed you have high ball speed you going to need a coarse urethane ball such as the blue hammer.  Or the black turbo.  You want more of a back end reation than cant beat the pearl hammers.  Or even the thunder flash by storm or another that is still out the black messenger titanium is another good urethane.  My bowling teammate throws nothing but urethane these days and plastic.  He really like that titanium messenger.  But likes his blue pearl hammer to.  hope this helps you.

Visionary Red Sorcerer was a good, strong urethane ball.

fozzie1969 -- The old black Hammer may have been the most versatile ball ever made (it certainly was for its time).  I have gone back to using mine and am doing better than with the reactive stuff.  I have a slate blue Gargoyle, but haven't drilled it up yet.  Look on the ball rack at your local center for a black Hammer in good shape, and ask the manager if he will sell it to you.  He'll probably give it to you and it will be well worth the money to have it plugged and redrilled to your specs.  --  JohnP

Good urethane balls from the days of old?  Hmmm, let me think...

As mentioned before, the urethane Hammers
AMF Black Angle
The Brunswick Rhinos (Black, Blue, Black Pearl, Red)
The Brunswick Rhino Pros (Black, Blue)
Columbia Black U-Dot
Columbia U2 (Black and Blue Pearl)
Columbia Beast Urethane
The Ebonite Turbos
Quantum Scarlet
Track Enforcer (the black urethane one, from the early 1990s)

I wish you luck in finding any of these, other than the Hammers on eBay.

As for newer releases, you may want to look at the Columbia Black Scout, Columbia Black Messenger, and Brunswick Blue Groove.

Hope this helps.

I threw a ceramicore Stingray(green c300 thing) a few yr ago, that hit hard for a non-resing/particle ball. You're better than me if you can find one though!

There have been loads of Blue Pearl Hammers and Black Hammers suddenly appearing on Ebay, and they're all New In Box.
