Any tips for someone who is throwing off the wrong foot
« on: November 16, 2011, 12:00:38 AM »
I have been working with my son on his bowling for the past few weeks. He has developed this preference to throw the ball on his right foot (he is right handed).

I have worked with him on Staggered Stance and all those excercises done at the foul line. It seems when I have him go back and start to take steps, he always wants to go on his right foot.

We went to the lanes last night and he likes to start with his left foot, so he is taking one less step. I thought maybe he should go to a four step approach.  He was starting to get it but it caused other issues. Either he was having trouble keeping the ball on the lane or he would still throw around his third step. I am very positive in my position on this, but I know he likes knocking the pins down (what kid doesn't want to).

Is there any kind of excercises or something I can use to get him change?

We practice without a ball at home. And he seems to be able to do it, but as soon as he gets on the approach, he throws the ball off the wrong foot. He is just doing it without thinking.

I am very patient. I don't care what his scores are in his Saturday league. But I know when he throws poorly on Saturday that it bothers him at times.

Any suggestions out there???

how old?

I just have my daughter pose a few times in the proper stance if she starts doing it on the wrong foot.  She when taking time off does the same thing and then when told to pose goes right back to doing the right thing!

Regards,

Lucky

With my daughter who is a couple of years older, when she first started i had her do a one step, then two step, three step and finally four step approach. It seemed to work for her.

For years when I first started I repeated mentally, "right, left, right, slide", as I took my approach.  If he's determined to start on his left foot, try five steps and add an initial "left" to the mantra.  --  JohnP

Typically, we start with one step deliveries. Over and over and over.... Stand at the line, swing the ball like a pendulum, step into the release with the proper foot. Program the body to get comfortable with the proper foot forward. From there, you can work into a full 4 or 5 step approach. Btw, pay close attention to his swing timing. When he starts the swing, the position of the ball during each step. Almost every kid i see who stops on the wrong foot has MAJOR ball swing timing flaws. Listen, he's young but at the perfect age to fix the problems. Practice, practice, practice. And have patience with the process, dad. :-)

He is 8 years old right? Why not let the kid have fun and figure it out for himself? He will do that once he sees people scoring better using a different slide technique than what he is.

If you are truly adamant on him learning the "right" way to slide at 8 years old, relate it to throwing a baseball.

I know some of you will flame me for this response, but make sure your son is having FUN doing something you enjoy before forcing him to "do it the right way."

A leftie posted his video on Bowling Ball Exchange and he looked pretty good doing this. Said he saw no need to change and from the looks of it, not sure he isn't  right.

1. gotta agree with lifted rillo on this, just make sure he is enjoying himself right now.  No need to push him so hard he quits.

2. Forget about bowling and put a golf club in his hand

Ball probably too heavy.  Trying to make up for it and throw it too hard.  Too young to truly be learning fundamentals.  Agree with the posture of letting him have his fun and when he's strong enough teach him the proper foot work

Don't believe in the Uzi, it just went off in my hand.  I, I believe in love.

You guys make a great point about fun. At that age, and above all else, kids should be having fun. I don't think 8 is too young to learn the basic fundamental of throwing off the proper foot, though. Maybe it's just a matter of finding the right balance between lessons and fun. Hell, make the lessons fun! lol!
