Ugh.... How do you get over the hump
« on: June 13, 2006, 02:08:06 AM »
Morning all,

I have to admit it's been a very frustrating summer as far as my scores go. I'm crrently bowling two leagues, one sport one fun. Sport I'm in the 190 range (not bad for never bowling in one) and my fun league I'm at 226 right now. Well last night I hit the wall yet again. 221, 224, and yet another 289. That makes two 289's this year and a 276. How do you get over the hump? Last night I ran the first 10, nothing unusual on any of the shots. I go up for the 11th, throw what looked like a great ball, left a ringing 10. The 7 flew across the deck but was taken out by the 9 that came out of the pit. I hit the pocket flush. Speed was all the same. My other 289 this year I left a ringing 4. Any advise on how to crack that 11th frame? I read the post that was up earlier in reguards to tighting up in the 10th and adjusting a little in case you pull it, but I didn't pull it at all. Even the guys on the lane next to me said I got robbed.

Thanks in advance, I guess I needed to vent a little as well.

Bill

I think sometimes you do just get robbed.  Especially when your messenger is intercepted.  But consider that there were probably questionable shots that did carry, and it's just a case of your karma catching up to you.

I've always heard to move in a little and give it a little more room on the last ball, because nerves will tend to make you pull it and swinging it a little more sort of compensates for that.  Never been in that position, so I don't know.

There is only one thing that I do every time I am in the position to shoot a 300 game.  I learned this after my first two attempts to shoot 300 failed.  My first attempt I rushed to the line and left a bucket on a terribly poor shot that was pulled well inside of target.  My second attempt the ball did not come off my hand clean and I left a 10-pin on a flush shot.

From that point, I took to the habit of focusing on my entire pre-shot routine.  I make sure to check my shoes, wipe the ball with my towel the exact same number of times, and check the rack.  Make sure to do everything in the exact same manner that you have the previous 9 or 10, or however many shots.  It really helps your mind to put yourself in the repetition of completing your pre-shot routine.  Secondly, before making any pressure shot, always take one or two deep breaths before executing your shot.  You can't believe how much this will free up the muscles in your arms and legs if you consciously make an effort to do this next time you are in the situation.

Since taking this approach to pressure shots, I converted 17 consecutive twelfth ball shots for 300 games, missed one last fall, and then shot my 18th 300 later in the year.  I stronly recommend taking a look at your pre-shot routine.  It's definitely worked well for me.

That's interesting advice.  I'll try that next time I need a clutch strike.  Usually I just do a couple big deep breaths to calm down everytime when I stand on the approach.

Like GLeo, I'd rather say that it is just bad luck. One should not think too much - in the situation, about the results and the potential reasons. I'd say relay, it will come. Yesterday I witnessed a 299 at my club house... perfect, well balanced player, and then a stone 7 on a clean pocket shot in the 12th frame. I think, even with a sound technique and any "zone" you might be in, there is still a piece of luck necessary to string together those 12 hits that result in a 300.

Just free your mind, and the rest will follow. And do not force it, unless you feel you can.

You are way overthinking this.  You need to realx throw a pure shot, this is easier said than done.  But in your mind you concentrate on thorwing a pure shot if you know you pured it than you know that was the best you can do on that given shot and it wasnt meant to be it will come.  Do force it you will never get it if you over think it and protect against throw ing a bad shot I had this happen to me just this weekend in a golf qualifier same approach appliies i was thinking about the cut line to much and playing protect shots and i got behind and shen i brought the agreessive ness back and went for it i came through.  But it is the same philosphy just get up there and pure one.  Dont overthink it in the 11th.  You didnt think about it the first 6 or seven so why start now.  It is a hard mind set to get in but once you do they will come like no other. good luck
