any trouble with older balls cracking ?
« on: July 10, 2010, 04:25:23 AM »
just curious, I have not had any trouble w/ any balls cracking, and God knows I have owned my fair share.
With all the talk about balls cracking, just curious to see if anyone has had any trouble with the older stuff with the thicker covers cracking on them while in relatively climate controlled storage ?

Oddly enough, the ball I had crack was a Storm Thunderflash.  Not only was the ball urethane, but the cover was about 3/4" thick.  It was just sitting on my bowling ball rack in my den.

I have been lucky for so many years getting away with storing balls in a shed and not having any issues but recently I had two Track Desert Heats crack clear around the ball sitting in a bowling bag in my closet. Also had a Twisted Fury Destruction fully crack after a grand total of 5 shots to try it out and then sitting in my main bag which is stored inside the house. The first Desert Heat was a single drill with quite a few games on it while the other two were plugged and redrilled but with low games and kept from extreme temperature changes so I have no idea why those happened to crack. That reminds me I need to get those cut in half for display balls

The only ones I've had crack were left at room temperature. They need to be thrown once in a while to keep the cover more pliable.

I have had a Neptune, Odyssey, Saga , 2 RSX''s and a Battle and my beloved RSP( shot my only 800 and a 300 and 299) since 05 to crack out on me.... I feel par of the problem now days is the filler core being used as all of these except the Neptune had a filler core... Sigh but I still love my RG equipment

The two Storm-labeled balls I owned both split while in a climate controlled setting.  One was in a box and the other was in one of the two-ball totes.

The LRG probably had no more than two dozen games on it.

Interestingly enough, never had a problem with Roto stuff that was poured in the same plants...

I have a NIB RSP.  Was thinking about getting it drilled... Not sure how it would react w/today's oil on wood lanes at my house... So not sure how to drill it.  Maybe I should make a thread in Roto forum about it.  Unless you really want it...  I could part with it.

I've had my beloved Battle split,a horizon solid, and one of my favorites, an RSP split.

Also, had a Vortex, a One, and a Killer Instinct pearl crack on me as well.

From personal experimentation, ya gotta put these balls on the lanes, and get oil in the pores, or they will dry out and crack, no matter who the maker is.
