Friction burn marks on track
« on: September 21, 2015, 11:10:27 AM »
Bowling last week, I was getting what looked to be friction marks on the first flare ring on my ball. Does this mean that there is not a lot of head oil and I am using a ball that has too strong/rough of a cover?

Friction burn marks?  Are you sure they aren't belt marks?

Pics?

They aren't belt marks.  I had it on two of my balls.  The marks were in pretty much the exact same place on both balls.  I used to get it on my gamebreaker every time I threw that ball

I already hit the surface with a pad to remove most of them but I will see if I can still get some pics.

Not positive, but what I believe it is, is when you double dribble the ball.  I have the same thing on a few of my bowling balls.  It's kind of like a thump, thump out onto the lane upon release!

My first thought is the same as JMM.  Probably the location where the ball is hitting the lane.

If they don't apply conditioner to the lay down area-which more and more centers are doing, it will scar the ball...as in the track area

I finally got around to getting pictures of this happening. All of these balls were just surfaced smooth with different grits. I saw the marks on my Covert Revolt 1000 abralon, Venom Shock 2000 abralon, and Tag 4000 and polished.

Is that from an AMF house that leaves the first 2 ft unoiled? From the location of the marks,  it looks like it's happening as soon as the ball touches the lane off your hand.

Feel the surface of the approaches. I bet they are the rough surface approaches and you are rolling the ball short of the foul line.

The AMF house I bowl starts application 2" from the foul line. Another AMF I went to, it's less than that.

I notice this on an IQ a bowler has at leagues. He's lay down is just inches past the foul line. But it's not as big as the pic posted.

The house that I see it the most is not an AMF house.  And I am putting the ball on the lane,  not the approach.  I agree it looks like it is right when the ball his the lane.

Having seen you bowl multiple times, I agree, you are not putting the ball down on the approach.
