Anybody ever have to switch hands?
« on: April 23, 2011, 02:29:37 AM »
I just recently had an accident, breaking my right arm just above the elbow, and it had to be surgically repaired with plates and screws.

I am in therapy now, but the therapist has said I will most likely never get back to a "normal" level of flexibility and strength. I asked him about bowling, but he really couldn't give me an answer, saying that it would "be up to me" after my recovery.

My arm won't straighten out totally, not even under the therapists pressure. It also won't flex past the 90 degree "L" shape.

If it doesn't get back to the point I can bowl with it again, would it be worth it to try to learn to use my left hand to bowl with?
Learn to laugh, and love, and smile, cause we’re only here for a little while.

I Think it really comes down to your passion and desire to bowl, for me I definitely would switch hands and start over, but I really enjoy bowling, there are a lot of people that would look at though as an excuse to finally quit. I hope things work out and you end up in better shape than expected but otherwise it may be a chance to jump sides, start fresh and be that damn lefty at the bowling alley for a change.

I strained my rotator cuff years ago and decided to bowl lefthanded. I surprised myself by actually shooting a 200 game and rolling an 600 series.

I broke my thumb as a teenager and bowled 3/4 of the season left handed just because I love to bowl. My lefty average was fifty pins lower but at least I was on the lanes. Every now and then at practice I'll throw a few shots lefty and I think I could probably do a lot better now if I had to switch permanently...remember its pretty easy on that side

& good luck with your rehab/recovery

When reading your discription of bowling after therapy the first thing that came to mind in style was Brian Voss.

He has that little bit of elbow bend in his arm swing. Especially in the later years.
This video quality is bad but really show the bent elbow and lower back swing.

I on occasion when practicing will throw one or two left handed and do pretty well at it. The biggest part is taking some time mentally to picture it. Mirror yourself right handed and then do it.

Be good, or be good at it.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

If you do decide to try left handed you'll probably need a new pair of shoes.  Remember, the better ones don't have a slide sole on each foot!  --  JohnP

I switched to my left hand 12 weeks from the end of this season. The footwork, the swing, the release, all of it came very naturally to me. I didn't do great but I was able to average 178. I use super cheap shoes so the soles were never an issue.
