Anybody know of a really top notch Center?
« on: March 13, 2005, 12:01:57 AM »
I mean a truly great place to bowl. One which is clean, takes care of their equipment, puts out a decent shot with a modern lane machine, has friendly counter folks, good food at their snack bar and helps to organize and run leagues properly.

Since there are so many posts regarding poorly run bowling (centers? alleys? lanes? whatever), how about some information about a wonderful place.

Oh, by the way, one that does NOT try to squeeze the last $ .02 out of you for every little item.

And a decent in-house pro shop, too.

Where are these wonderful places?

I like classic Bowl in morton Grove just out of chicago.  Not sure how good the pro shop guy is on drill balls but I hear he gives great lessons.

Well BZ Carolier where they held the US Open is a great house on weekends and nights. The prices are good for league bowlers, great oil patterns. One negative COSMIC and Parties, but I guess you get that wherever you go.

Taylor Lanes in Taylor, south of Detroit (or as we say around here -- "Downriver.")

I bowled at Carolier back when Carolier roller skating rink was next store probably in the early 70's. For those who might remember.  No not me, the roller skating rink and the North Brunswick circle

mycroft is right about classic, if they ever had open lanes...

Hawthorn is nice, but the prices are through the roof...

I'll always be partial to BZ Niles, pro shop is pretty nice there too...;-)

Zeppoz in Pullman Wa.
The resident pro/driller is excellent, the food is great, the beer is well priced, they even have a couple of pinball machines for us dinosaurs who hate video games.    The only possible downside is the casino.  Due to the casino parking is a real problem, plus we have the odd occurrence of someone chasing another player around whilst weilding a meat cleaver (yes, it happened).  But it's making so much money that there is a good chance of putting in 8 more lanes and possibly a CATS system.

The problem with Classic is the shot is possibly the greatest wall in all the land.  It's not even legal.  Right now the pace is for 35-40 (yes that's Thirty five to forty) 300's and about 15 800's.  Saturday during one league there were four 300 games bowled.  I'm up about 10 pins from last year (and last year I was down) but there are guys who have increased their average 20-30 pins.  But other than the shot, and the fact that the air blowers don't work too well, it is a top notch place.  And the snack bar is independent and more of a restuarant than a traditional snack bar, so their food is better than most places.

Beverly Lanes (it's in Park Ridge I think) pretty much has the total package in my opinion.  The outside of the building looks bad, but the machinery is in good shape, shot is fair, and the Zykes are a few of the most knowledgable guys in IL.

Dan, Beverly Lanes is in Arlington Heights Illinois and features Sport Bowling plus you will never find Disco Bowling on any night at any time.

Looking forward to the next time we bowl at BZ Niles.

Lava Lanes in Medford Oregon...

And since there is a PBA stop there, I've asked a couple of the pros, and they agree it's one of the very best centers around. Period.

Blue River Bowl in Shelbyville, IN - hands down the best center I've ever been in.
