Whaddya think?
« on: October 13, 2004, 04:23:20 AM »
As I posted elsewhere I just found out that were bowling on a slight variant of PBA E.  So last night my driller, the resident pro, asked me if I wanted to bowl an upcoming PBA regional that will use E.  I'm thinking about it.  I don't think I'll do it because even though I'm averaging right at 200 now, and can really kill the shot when everything is good with me, I don't think it's worth $250 to go get my rear end handed to be by guys that are averaging 215 on the real version of E.  Would you bowl?  I would do it in a heartbeat if it was a bit cheaper, but I think I can go watch, be just as entertained, and save the money.  (Hoping that $250 falls out of the sky real soon.)

I have seen you bowl, save your money.

Perhaps we can spend it on the magical juniperberry elixir.

Rags,  I think the PBA has stopped paying seniors in regular regionals.  There's been some discussion about that on the PBA web site.  The only way for a senior to get payed now is to enter a senior regional.

Colin, thanks for the info.  I guess what this really comes down to is this:  If the guy who owes me money pays up in time I'll bowl, if he doesn't I won't have the disposable cash and won't.  Interesting conflict for me; on the one side my ego and curiosity are driving me to bowl, on the other reality is telling me no.

Rags--Good luck!

One thing I just thought about is that if you do chose to bowl.  Just an FYI...in case you didn't know.  All of your equipment including shoes, any wrist device plus balls has to be PBA registered.  I've seen a few newbies show up thinking they could use what they normally use.

Scott, thanks.  I think I might have a problem with my spare ball - I use a Buzzsaw XXXL and I don't think Lane1 is registered for regionals.  All my other stuff is pretty much Roto now (oops, also have a Buzzsaw Silver Diamond) and I use Dexter shoes, no wrist brace.

Rags,  I just checked the approved equipment list, and Lane1 is approved for only regional and senior competition.  So, this means that none of the exempt players (or anyone who enters the PTQs) can throw a Buzzsaw this year, execpt in regionals.  I'm with everyone else, if you've got the money, give it a shot.

As for newbies using the wrong equipment, from what I've seen, it not usually a problem with a ball, it more often a wrist device that is not approved.

Hey Rags, I just wanted to point out that you have to apply to bowl as a guest in a regional, each region has its own rules regarding who is allowed to play, and there are a limited number of spots (sometimes none, depending on the number of lanes available).

Have you or your pro shop guy checked with the regional director?

Seadrive, I don't think getting a spot will be a problem.  If you look in the Pacific NW forum on the PBA boards there is a major amount of moaning about the lack of entries up here.  Compared to other regions we are way down - I think the last regional had 30 entries.

Rags - Your post reminds me of a young poker player playing in the big stakes for the first time.

He has what he believes is the winning hand and bets away.  Another player then outbids him and the first player decides that he needs to look at his cards again.  He then folds because he doesn't feel that he can win now that the stakes are higher.  The cards never changed just the stakes.  To a poker player you are playing the cards not another player.  The bluff is what makes the game interesting.

You stated that you would bowl if it was cheaper.  Why is that?  Is that because you would bowl it because you feel that you have no chance and throwing the money is okay or do you think that the odds would change if the entry fee was lower.

I think that sometimes that is also what make the difference between a pro and an amateur.  To the pro it is just him and the ball and the lane.  if he bowls great so be it.  He doesn't bowl against another player.  They separate themselves into what they can control and leave the uncontrollable factors out.

If you feel the entry fee is too high and you will get your rear end handed to you, then you have truly lost before you started.  It is all mental at that point and you won't have a snowballs chance in hell.  To be superior you have to have a superior attitude and a superior state of mind.

That is my take on it.

Rags correctly understands and accepts that he hasn't a snowball's chance in Hell of winning the tournament, or even making match play, but he wants the experience of competing against better players, on a shot that is tougher than, but similar to, what he's been bowling on, to see how he measures up.

It's a cost/benefit analysis.

I don't see anything wrong with approaching it this way.

Doc, the only reason money figures into it is that, for a while at least, I don't have a lot of "disposable" income - I work for the state, ya know.  Whether it cost $10 or $1000 I really don't have a prayer of winning something like this.  BUT, I do feel that if I can execute as well as I do normally in league, on this pattern, I could get a check.  But the check won't cover entry plus motel and travel.  Really, Seadrive has it nailed pretty much as I see it - there are a lot of players who will likely be there, who I respect a great deal and would love to compete with just to see how close I am.
