Anybody use 14lb?
« on: September 25, 2008, 06:48:36 AM »
Hi, I've thrown 16lb since I was 15, Last year I started using some 15lb but still mostly 16. I hurt my shoulder the last couple weeks of the season and it appears I haven't regained much strength but I'm working on that. 15lb seems heavy to me right now that I was thinking of trying 14lb. I was wondering who had positive experiences going to 14lb. My timing is also way off right now so I was hoping it would help me get back on track.

Ex boss at the pro shop threw 16 all his life, hurt his shoulder, practiced with a 14 high performance Storm ball, and 8 weeks later, shot 858 ! Keep in mind he was a regional pro once and probable adopted his release and he still carried like a 15. It can be done. I would stay away from the weaker core balls though !

14's a good weight, I use to throw it when I was younger and had 800 with 14lbs, the 14lbers have the same cores as the 15 and 16lbers, and for me they hooked more than the 15 and 16lbs, by a pretty wide margin.

i mostly threw 16lbs, every now and then a 15lber.  i hurt my wrist about 7 months ago.  thought i was going to need surgery and put it off as long as i could.  i dropped to 14lbs cause i lost stregnth in my arm.  we thought it was nerve damage.  i was on the verge of going under the knife until a started talking to a sports medicine guy at the gym.  he helped me rehab my wrist, forearm, bicep, tricep....pretty much whole arm.   i did fairly well with the 14lber.  avg 196 & 203 in summer leagues stroking up the 10 board.  almost switched to left hand too!  took two weeks off to rehab and let the arm rest/heal.

well, now a month later, my wrist is about 95% and my arm feels stronger than before.  i like throwing the 14lbers so i havent changed.  "CARRY" has not suffered one bit at all.  people are amazed at me throwing 14lbs and smashing the hole.  they cant believe it.  one drawback is its so light that its easy to hit up on it more than i want.

dont be afraid of the 14lbers.  they're every bit as good as the 15's & 16's!  some people say you cant play deep with it because it wont have enough on the backend.  well on my typical house shot i start out 3rd arrow and could easily migrate to 4th or 5th, or switch balls and play same line.  and like i said...CARRY DOES NOT SUFFER

hope this info helps you, and good luck with your recovery!

I'm back down to 14 this year due too a sore wrist. With my higher rev rate I've had better carry because I get a little more deflection than 15lbs stuff. My biggest problem when I first started throwing them was I would constantly blow by the breakpoint. I started using a step down in surface from what my 15's were. If my 15lb ball was at 4000 polished, I went to 2000 polished or 4000 with no polish to make up for the extra speed.

Local pro shop owner, a former PBA champ and regional tour player just dropped to 14lb. balls. He shot 827 Monday night, finished with a 300.

I dropped to 14 several years ago. I can't tell any difference from 15 except hand position changes seem to have more effect. There are also some balls that have more differential than the 15 and 16 pounders. Like JD74 said, they also hook plenty. i don't know about the weaker core thing, my power groove is a great ball.

Less deflection, more hitting power (not that much but its there), comfort and speed (if most people threw 14 they would overpwer it and throw it wayyyyy too hard).

If you can stay back on the 14# and don't throw it 50mph like most people do when they drop down a pound. The little less weight will not affect the carry... much, but if anything I like throwing 14 more than 15.

I want to thank everybody for the info. I just can't throw the ball too fast right now so I don't think I have to worry about that. I'm throwing it too slow with too many revs. I'm willing to give 14lb a try.

I've been using 14# for over 2 1/2 years and pin carry is every bit as good as I was getting on 15# and the corner pin carry is better. The only problem I have had with 14# is that due to their lighter weight, I try to muscle or over power the ball at times.

Two years ago I had dropped to 14# because I had wrist surgery twice. My wrist is probably stronger now than it ever has been, but I will keep throwing 14#. Never had an honor score til I dropped in weight, and since then I have 3-300's and 2- 800's. Carry is great, and I can adjust to the lanes alot easier. The only thing I had a problem with at first was my timing, but it didn't take long to adjust. So, go ahead and drop to 14# you won't regret it.

Carry isn't worse with 14# vs 15-16#, it's just different.  Light hits may not carry the 5 like a 16# would but high hits might not leave a 9-pin like the 16# would.  You may need to adjust where the ball enters the pocket, but carry is just fine at 14#.

The downside to lighter weight balls, like JD74 said, is that most people will overpower them.  They throw it faster, maybe with more revs, maybe not.
