Bowling Shape...
« on: March 01, 2005, 06:19:26 AM »
Being in college and having nothing to do except homework, I am thinking of starting a weight lifting routine to keep me in shape. I remember the movie "King Pin" when they first walk into the bowling alley in Las Vegas, the Amish guy says, "wow, Ive never been in the presence of so many great athletes before." As the camera pans around we see the largest men eating the greasiest food the alley has to offer. I was just wondering if anyone here has any weight lifting routine that you do. Is there any sort of work out that you do that you believe makes you a better or stronger bowler? Or are you pretty lazy like me and just sit around and bowling is your only sort of exercise? sorry if this topic has been posted many times before.

work out ur arms, cuz u hold the ball with them, work out ur legs, cuz u ahve to walk with them, work out ur back for ur backswing, work out ur thighs(spelling correctly?) cuz u need them strong to have a firm position at the foul line. BTW, this is all made up so dont do it and expect it to work

Don't forget to do some flexibility exercises/work-outs...you want to add strength but you don't want to become "muscle bound".

yea sean get up off your a-s-s and do something! I'm gonna say just work everything. If your stomach is too big to walk, your not gonna be able to get to the line! As for bowling specific things, arms, wrist, legs. (at least I think that would make sense!)

Ditto on checking out Jeff Bridges. One point would be careful to not bulk up too much. It restricts motion and causes additional muscling of shots. This is from experience. When I started working out, my average went up and endurance was great. As time went on I got caught up in the gym goals and started lifting heavier and heavier. Ended up maxing at 325 bench and did 300 on a regular basis. My average and consistency went down and my weight and flexiblity went the other way too. I am now using more aerobic exercise, lighter weights with higher reps and training the legs more religously. If bowling in tournaments which require 8 or 9 games, your legs tend to go first. The scores go down from there.

On doing too much.
It made a friend of mine really muscle the ball. He used a 16lb ball and bowled like a spinner. He could litterally flick the ball off his hand because his arms had become so strong.
