Anyone drill their own stuff???
« on: December 31, 2008, 01:31:57 AM »
Hey all, wondering if any of you drill your own stuff and what you use to drill with. I have a regular drill press but I bought a professional ball jig from a proshop thats closing in my area. My buddy bought everything else from him so I have means to check static weights on the ball also. He had already sold the bits and Im wondering if the bits a unique to bowling. I plan to take some drilling coarses if nothing else it will be fun to experiment. The sad part is, its a sign of the times, another shop closing. we always bought there cause it was in our house. You would think the bowling center would do what it could to keep the shop there. Hopefully the center isnt going out, that would be a shame. If my buddy and I thought we could keep our day jobs and run the pro shop we would. We wouldnt need to support our families off of it, and hopefully sooner or later the center could find someone interested in the business.

JimmyT drills his own stuff.

The owner of that center made me the same offer about 8 years ago but I was satisified with my normal driller.
So I declined it.

I'm drilling my own stuff now, too.  It's been a blast learning all that's involved.  Screwed up a few times, but I presume that's just part of the learning curve.

The bits I have came with the drill press and other stuff I bought from one guy selling all his equipment.  The bits resemble masonary bits, but have much sharper edges.  I'm presuming they're specially designed for drilling bowling balls.

You might want to look at Jayhawk Bowling Supplies...they provide a multitude of pro shop equipment and their site can give you a starting point to begin shopping around.

Good luck!

Very cool. We thought we would drill our own stuff, and ya were expecting a few screw ups    god knows we have enough old balls around to practice on. Maybe if we got good enough we could pro shop part time on the side. Sometimes its not the ball sales thats important. Its the supplies and support from the pro shop that gets missed. Would love to find a way to keep the pro shop in the house I bowl in even if its a couple days a week. Thanks for the replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been drilling my own stuff for about 2 yrs. Try this link for supplies http://www.innovativebowling.com/  They list all their prices on the web pages and are great people to deal with. I only drill my own stuff but to me the hard part is the fitting. Drilling holes in a ball is easy but to get the right fit the first time isn't.

I drill my own.
I use a Gil-Mac, so the bits are unique for this style press. I bought everything from an AMF center that went under. I am still a rookie. I've only drilled about 100 balls.

Im gonna start doing full drills on my stuff first. Ive been using the press to prep stuff for plugging and I've changed my thumb molds to change pitch. Nothing from scratch yet, but thats gonna change!

By many standards, yes, 100 would be considered a rookie.
Ask someone who has been drilling for 10, 30, 50 years how many balls they've drilled. 100 balls is nothing. I consider myself a rookie. I still have plenty to learn. The day you think you know everything is the day you are finished.

With no offense intended, 100 is not considered a lot.  In a busy month (like Aug), I'd easily take in 10-15 balls to plug and sell maybe 10+ a week so that would be over 100.  But I also have been doing this over 20+ years...

Hey skidhook,

Check out the sites the guys have mentioned.  I bought most of my equipment from Innovative or Jayhawk.  My bits are carbide tipped and I believe that is a common thing in the business (may be wrong).  The thing I had to do was to convert my press to be able to take s tapered vs straight shank bits (so you may want to look into what type of shaft you currently have).

You'll need a scale (as you know already) and I'd recommend getting pitch gauges.  If you plan on plugging and cutting, you'll need those supplies and tools as well.  Feel free to pm me and I'll help offer what advice I can, good luck.

I prefer to drill my own stuff, but if she says no then I have to go down the street to the ex-girlfriend and drill that stuff.
