Is this a Sport or a Game?
« on: May 02, 2005, 01:09:08 PM »
For me it seems like the technology has improved but the bowlers havent.  The only thing that people do is change equpiment; instead of changing lines, speed, and hand positions.  Instead they just switch to a different ball and play the same place.  It doesnt take a genius to figure out, "hey my line is drying out at my feet maybe i should move left and find the oil" but instead they play the same line with a less agressive ball.  It is not a sport anymore it is bumper bowling for adults.  When i start bowling ABC i want to have a challenge not some averaging 230 crap and shooting 700 everyweek its a sport.  Right now its a game. enough said

It depends...on the average league level, its a game/hobby, easy oil patterns with hook in a box bowling balls, doesn't require great ability to throw decent scores. PBA and true sport bowling, usually just grabbing another ball does not cut it. Got to match your speed and angle with the way the lanes are playing and must be able to Repeat. That takes skill. Average League night=Game, Pro Level= Sport. No one real answer.

It's really hard and I still have to say no one real answer. They are going to say they have skill and claim it is a sport, but it is really up in the air. The top bowler on my high school team finished with a 216 avg this year but to tell you the truth he really does not know much, just sort of know which ball of his he has hooks more and less and he knows to move left if it hooks too much and right if not enough, other than that he really isn't a bowling expert. I suppose maybe the true answer lies in how far you intend to take it or how seriously you take it(not to be confused with how great your ego says you are). I consider this a sport for my teamate because he has been successful on sport shots and has bowled well in high school competition. The level you play at and your mindset decide it, I guess I'll go with that.

Yea what state are you bowling in, in mine FL the past month 3 kids have bowled 300 and 1 shot it twice.  I almost shot it 2nite and so did Ezrol he went front 10 and then next game i go front 9.

Here are the averages 4 my Saturday handicap doubles league.
Jeff Naus 231.6 Average over 32 weeks
Mathew Ezrol 226.4
Matt Lazarus 222.8
Mar Reces 207.5

And these kids except for the last one are 200 average bowlers everywhere. In Florida you have a S#it load of competition and this is only from south flordia.

300's are no big deal. It used to be once in a life time achievment. The top bowler shoot 10 a year easy on THS. Its only 12 in a row.

Being a kid i want to be weaned off of the THS teat, on saturday nights there is normally a 5-8 game sweeper and they put out a preaty tough sport shot sometimes i will ask them to extend it a couple more lanes so i can practice on it,  The thing i love about it is that it makes you think about every little thing and it is mentally straining.  Intead of throwing it 12 different times to the same area in league u have to throw it 12 different times at a single board.
