ive been practicing consistently playing between 20-30games a week for the past several weeks. naturally, my thumb has gotten larger and ive developed calluses at the base of my thumb and on my palm below the pointing finger. all pretty bearable but not too pleasing for the ones i handshake..hah
i should be able to remedy the callus at the base of my thumb by beveling the thumb hole and wearing a glove for the palm callus.

the one that irritates me the most is this lingering cut below my ring finger where the finger enters the grip(right below the 1st bend of the finger).  this usually gets reopened after a few games.  in the past ive alleviated the problem by using robby's skin patch around this area but this only lasts for a few games and then id have to reapply the patch.  does anyone else have this issue? i was thinking of using some sort of tape similar to what vise sells but that would mean moving one size up on the finger grips. before i switch out all my balls id like some feedback from those using finger tapes to avoid this very same issue im having.
could these cuts around the bend of the fingers be related to an improper ball fitment?
im holding my finger in pain right now and will need a few days for this cut to heal.

You should have your span and grips checked out.  I used to have similar problems, now I can bowl 20 games and my hand feels fine.

agroves, did you have that finger span widened?  im thinking if the span is too short, it's allowing for my finger to be inserted deeper than normal, resulting in more applied friction below where my finger tip bends.

Reefer addict, I'm guessing your span is too long.  That would explain the callous on your palm and the cut on your finger.  Put the j down and go to the proshop.

lol you're misinterpretting my name.  "reefer" as in someone who is into reef aquariums, not the j.  ive heard the callus on the palm is related to the release  and havent heard of it being due to having too wide of a span. then again, im no expert.

To fix my finger bleeding problem with my middle finger I went to Vise Grips Vacu-Grip system. Worked instantly, Rick Steelsmith had the same problem and made the move to the same system for the same cure.

was it ever determined what caused the finger bleeding?  just the type of insert was causing it?

I used to use plain jane oval inserts, the edges were rounded out some to help with comfort level. With the way I lift out of the ball these normal grips would dig into the skin. I tried no inserts, problem faded a little but not cured, so I tried the Vacu-Grips and problem solved. I had my span checked and it wasnt the problem. I would just double check your spans to make sure your other calluses arent a direct result of incorrect span.

Have your SPAN checked and read luckyleftys post on finding proper pitches with a COKE bottle.

That was the soundest advice I ever got....(the post)
Also you may, if you throw with a robo arm, have a span that is way too long.
(my span with the pro release was 1/4" shorter than my span without....

Things like this make a difference.

I am guilty of second guessing someone who has never seen me bowl also.... do yourself a favor and find a competent driller....

okay i forgot to mention one key fact..i bowl a lot of games and its common for me to throw 15games in 1day x3times a week so may also have a lot to do in why im getting these calluses.

The number of games you bowl per week really doesn't matter.  With proper fitting equipment you shouldn't have any large callouses or bleeding. If you can't get your equipment redrilled right away, a quick fix for that bleeding finger would be to put a couple layers of super glue over the area that has been giving you trouble before you bowl. It can be a slight pain to peel off after bowling, but it has always worked better for me than using the skin patch.

I had this problem, and it was from inserting my finger too deep into the hole.  I put some athletic tape right around the finger, where the cut was forming, then I put smaller inserts in and all is better now

i had my proshop look at my span. all looks well and it looks more like im inserting my finger too far in. the cut is about 1/8 " below the bend from my finger tip. next time out, ill be more conscious about how much insert my finger and see if that helps alleviate the cut.  as far as the palm callus below the pointing finger, it seems as though its a nature of my release according to a few ppl i spoke to.

I had my span shortened and switch to Vise Grips Vacu-Grip system, not a problem at all unless it is really humid in the alley's.
If I could only bowl my weight, I still would not average 200.   But hey I still damm sexy!

If your skin is being ripped apart and your Proshop guy says your span is ok, then the problem you are having is a result of not having enough pitch in that finger. So you would want to pitch the finger under toward the wound since the wound is happening at the top of the hole. I did the same thing to my Middle finger when I was ripping it up.

okay i wasnt clear in explaining where the cut was. it is on the bottom side of my ring finger.
