Anyone else sick of this?
« on: September 01, 2008, 01:51:23 AM »
Anyone else sick of every ball company using the same core over and over again just tweaking the cover. Whether they just add pearl or make it a solid or make it a little stronger. It is just starting to get old to me that each company uses the same core 4 or 5 times before they finally make something NEW.

Core shape doesn't really matter, that's just marketing, it's where the mass or weight is placed.  They could change the core shape on every ball if they wanted to.  Part of it is building familiarity, if you like a ball, and see it's got the same core, but maybe with a different coverstock, you probably will buy it to fit another place in your arsenal.  And like somebody already said, cover accounts for the majority of ball reaction.  Take a plastic ball and sand it to 200 and see what happens.

As long as the ball has an Ebonite V2 Core or a Lane 1 Diamond Core or a Brunswick Twisted Fury Core or an AMF Night Hawk Core or a Track Havoc Core, I have no problem with how many times these companies use these cores over and over and etc.

Does anyone remember the days when a lot of bowlers were taught and thought the weight block was the main reason a ball hooked and the coverstock did  have little or nothing to do with it?

Visionary Test Staff? Like they make the decisions on Visionary's ball lineup! Just a way they get people to use their equipment and make it appear that you're vote or say matters. Anybody can pay the money to be on the so called test staff! Don't get me wrong, I've used their stuff and it rolls pretty good and they have worn out the DC Tour weighblock in just about every lineup for the past 8 years, the new Gladiator was a welcome change in weighblock! Just my $.02, Bruce
P.S. They used a lot of similar technology in the beginning as the old Faball/Hammer, probably because of John Wonders connection with Hammer Midwest and they are in the old Hammer plant!

Lemme address these two uneducated, misinformed statements 1-by-1...

1) You do realize how many times you typed the phrase "Test Staff" in your statement...right? And how many times has Visionary Bowling Products referred to it as a "You Pay to make Executive Decisions in our Company Staff"?

Exactly moron!

The Test Staff is for just that...testing their equipment at bargain prices, and all you have to do is pay the fee, and write a review on every ball you get through the program.

Now, for #2...

Let's see....since the Warlock series...Hmmm....The Executioner core looks almost identical...NOT!

Maybe the Gargoyle core.....NOPE!

So, in essence, the 2 series released after the Warlock series had ABSOLUTELY NO SIMILARITIES to the DC Core...other than it was in the middle of a VBP bowling ball...

As to the price...I can sort of see your point!

BUT....I am not of the perception that ball companies are really making it big or that I want to rush out and create a ball company.  (It seems a lot of em start...and go broke).

With the new poruous coverstocks I am seeing balls come out with old cores that move so great on today's conditions.

ie the storms's with the old thunder blocks with all the R2 coverstocks....wow!

the noize and wrath dead flush with the old TiBoss core...wow!

There is some good stuff out there....old cores....new coverstocks....super!

If it works, and I can see the difference, then I don't complain about it.

The thing is, people still buy every new release regardless of if it's groudbreaking technology in the core. It's simple marketing really. And as others have mentioned, it may match up better with a different coverstock.

That's a true "problem". I also have the impression that many players still go by the idea of "expensive = big hook = high scores", and pro shops like that motto since they can sell expensive balls over and over again, and their customers are happy with it.

If you take a look from a kind of reverse angle - if you look at the ball reaction that is to be achieved through a certain coverstock/core combo, sticking to proven core designs or evolving them step by step is IMHO not the worst thing, even though it might not look sexy. Most of the recation comes from the coverstock and its preparation, the core is IMHO a secondary component which should not be judged by design, rather by the RG numbers and its matchup with the intended coverstock and purpose. E. g., look at Morich or Visionary, it is impressive what can be done to a core just by shifting desnities or adding or leaving away weight pucks. And I think nooone will deny that these are great balls.
