Title: anyone else stuck behind a brick wall this season
Post by: xrayjay on December 18, 2015, 11:54:24 AM
This season I've been having issues trying to pick up these two spare combos.

I'm 60% in picking up the 3 6 10 (6 of 10) :o
I'm 20% in picking up the baby split. (1 of 5) >:( after 36 weeks.

These leaves were never an issue before, I could pick these up easy. Even if there was a different split combo with the 3 6 10, I'd pick those up majority of the time.

Now when I do leave these combos, mentally I am screwed. I don't know if I should pick up the spare ball or the strike ball.

This holiday break I'll spend more time at the 24 hour alley for their "all you can bowl" and practice.

Make sure you are approaching the spare in the best way.  One thing I see too many people do on any combination of the 3-6-10 is getting the ball out too far.  This requires the ball to travel right to left when it gets to the pins.  Physics will prevent the ball from deflecting properly to get the 10.

Try to find a line and release that allows the ball to finish moving straight, or better yet, moving left to right at the pins.  This will allow the ball to deflect properly and will convert any combination with the 3-pin.

I know some use their strike line and hook at it too. And others stand left and go straight to the 3 6 with a plastic. Also, I know of a bowler who stands right and rolls with a plastic end over end - she's right handed.

I'll work on it and hopefully find something that would work. In the past, any right side leaves were not a problem using plastic and the 4th arrow system.....

3,6,10 I am 5 for 9 or 55% and twice I left the 3 standing.

Baby splits just 2 for 6 or 33%

The 6,10 is my killer....13 for 26 or 50% and leaving the 6 pin only 8 times using plastic.

So yes, it has me big time though I have been much better the last 7 weeks

When I miss any of the spares you mentioned or a ten pin, for me it is usually a lack of focus.
I found that when I shoot these spares, I start my focus when I am picking up my spare ball and when stepping up on the approach, I say to myself that I am not missing this spare, then I go and make it.
This is what works for me.

3-10 and 3-6-10 can be nasty combinations, especially on house patterns.  I never throw my strike ball at them.  The key is to keep your ball away from (inside ) the dry hook area as long as possible, even when throwing plastic.
