Anyone else toning down your style?
« on: November 29, 2005, 12:10:54 PM »
Just curious if i'm the only one trying to make a transition to a straighter player.  So far the biggest problem I've had is that I tend to sometimes cup my wrist or get around the side of the ball, which as you might guess sends me straight through the nose or worse.  But otherwise it's pretty nice just keeping my hand up the back of the ball and not hitting on it or anything like that.  I'm also liking the deep, heavy continuous roll I get from the forward roll rather than the skid skid skid snap reaction from the old style.  One problem I have had though is with transitions when I have to move left and my foward roll doesn't get enough angle, I tend to just come around the side of the ball rather than just come around it a little more to get a bit more side roll.  But it's a work in progress.  I actually haven't noticed a decrease in carry, seems the only negative is when I push it right I don't have any real recovery with the up-the-back style.

So anyone else doing the same general thing, or am I the only person going against the grain of being rev-obsessed and trying to grip and rip it?

PS-  I do practice getting deep and lettin loose, to keep it in my repertoire just in case.

I'm in the same boat as you. I switched midway through last season in November. Didn't like playing inconsistent all the time. Shooting like 250, then 175, and 230 or something like that. So, I decided no more trying to crank the ball all the time, or as my wife puts it, no more bowling like a monkey. I too lost some carry with not as much angle. Not a ton, but a little bit. I now have become much more consistent though. I averaged 209, 212, and 215 last year. And that was with me starting out the season horribly at like 190 on all of those leagues. This year I'm at 224 and 211. Both have dropped after bad weeks of me losing my cool. I think I've hit my slump this year. Just need to stay behind the ball, since coming over the top of it has caused me to throw inconsistnet again. Need to tone it down again and get back into a nice groove. It'll work out for the best.

I'm in the opposite boat... My spare game, mental game, and transition game are in very good shape at the moment, but I would really love to increase my carry percentage by creating more angle (more revs and more speed). I still need to work on perfecting my release to get that rev rate up there.

Interesting this is brought up, for I've been practicing more then ever soley on doing this. I'm a tweener that likes to hook alot of boards when able. I'm not tired at all of doing this but when the lanes get dry I don't like toning it down, so I end up playing really deep and usually is mild sucess from there and don't feel comfortable. I've been watching a few guys on league when they can't hook the whole lane they can throw a powerful straight outside line ball and that's what I've been working on. I've developed standing on 25 between 1-2 arrow and looking out when they change and insted of getting around it and under it with my fingers I flathand it and just get around it. there When there is friction outside, it works. I've yet to try it in league yet but after a couple of months of practicing I'm determined for this as soon as I feel it nessesary right away. I've also tried on a little heavier condition standing on 25 between 2-3 arrow and down. This wouldn't be something I'd do if I'm struggling with my big hook tweener game. If I see it in practice I'm going to try it but if I do I'm going to stick with it. I figured it's either hook it alot of throw it really straight, not in between. It's gotten to the point when there is a good amount of oil I know I can do well unless it's spotty. Now I hope this straight shot will pay off when it's go time. The Norm Duke approach of throwing it straight outside, and then really hook it inside... I really like watching him bowl and I study his tapes. My style is somewhat similar of him...and not too much bigger then him!

I guess I would fall in the toning up style versus toning down. Being that I've always been a straighter player, my bowling coach has added some different facets to my game which allow me to play more of a wider hook when called for and also add little tricks of the trade when I need to handle carrydown, line adjustments for increased carry and finger/hand release techniques. Some of the things I've been able to incorporate quickly into my game, others have taken months to get into working shape.

Bowling for me is a constant work in progress and I learn something new everyday.

Andy & iamnas22,

I have about 40+ years of experience (not all "prime" of course) and I have been working on this for 2+ years now. The object of my personal exercise is to get my rev rate and my ball speed into a closer state of re-inforcement, so to speak. Basically, to get them to support one another - My rev rat ehas always been much higher than my ball speed creating over/under to a fierce degree.

It's been a long and tedious road that I have given up several times.
2 steps back and one forward, ad nauseam. I know I am getting closer and you will also, if you don't give up.

Tonight is a poignant example (look that up in your Funk and Wagnalss!)
Th elanes were oilier than expected and my best oiler was not sufficient for my normal lines. I had to move left and use a breakpoint much further outside than I am used to. I was ready to kill: left both a 7-10 on light hit with pins flying everywhere and 2/8/10 on a zero pin action light hit. I was livid, fit to be tied. WOuld have killed something living if I could have.

2nd game I only wanted to go home and lay in bed for 24 hours. started with 2 opens, then 3 spares, as I started to care once again. Then from the 6th to the 11th frame I went dead flush for 5 strikes; left a 7 pin on a light hit in the 11th frame; lost my point but kind of inspired the team to a win. I cared again.

Then I stuffed 11 of 12 for a 277; ringing 10 pin in the 4th frame stopped a 297.

You've got to focus and you've got to care to persevere!

What is termed as tweener hell.  Basically my same problem and the problem of many tweeners.

Nice rolling Jeff!

Lanes came to you or you bared down and gave 'er hell?

BTW--my take on this is to be a very good bowler to be able to tackle ALL lane conditions and compete you need all the different releases, ball speeds, etc.  On a THS one doesn't need to be as fine.

I really comes down to what you have as far as expectation of yourself and what you want out the game.

When you guys talk about being straighter, how many boards movement on the average do you have? Being rev challenged, I have only a few boards movement and would love to have much more than that. Yet you guys are aiming to throw it straighter. It's quite confusing.

(Repeating)

How many boards I (or anyone) covers is very dependent upon the lane conditions at the time and the ball in your hand.  I'll try to explain what "taming" my shot down means to me.

Most of my taming down has to do with less wrist-cupping and projecting the ball further down the lane with good speed and revs.  This well usually result in a "straighter" shot for me that is much more controllable. When I start "hitting up" on the ball (like I used to do in the urethane days), it tends to create more revs and slower speed.  This shot is harder to control and errant shots will usually send the ball through the nose for disastrous splits, or through the 3 pin leaving ugly washouts.  At least when I miss with the straighter ball, I'm usually leaving makeable spares.

My advice would be to not get hung up on how many boards you cover.  All you really need is to get enough on the ball to hit the pocket and carry 10, anything more than that is overkill.

9~,
I agree with you on this one. I have a straighter game (although I am just beginning on working towards a second style that will allow me to get inside when needed). My biggest problem is the 10 pin. I see the crankers throwing 170/300/180. When the hit the pocket, the pin action gets things done. But when they are off, or miss the transition, the train wrecks are disastrous. Crazy splits everywhere! I was off last night, but I was still consistent (197/194/198). I felt like I bowled 6 games last night because I was throwing 2 balls most frames. Last game was first nine frames spares, and 3 strikes in the tenth. No ugly splits. I think the straigter game is more consistent, but the crankers have a better shot of obtaining an honor score. All comes down to what you are physically capable of (some of us just cannot rev it up), and what your goals are (clean, consistent performances, or one big one now and then).

My take....you can still move inside and get more axis tilt and NOT be a cranker.  Or you can come up back of ball more with forward roll and not be a pure stroker.

IMO...you need both to be effective and competitive.  Those that only have one area of the lane to play with one release are hampered in a large way.

a_ak57, I have toned my style quite a bit. I have since become more accurate not because of something I am doing physically but mentally. Before the shot I think "Be solid at the line" or "Post your shot." Meaning stay with my shot to become more accurate and it is amazing how cool the results have been. I have been adjusting hand positions just like you. I am very fond of the forward roll. There are times when I need more side rotation though.

Thanks for the replies-- Well except for merkin.

Sounds like I'm in the same boat as Charlest.  Because I have soft/slow ball speed (around 16) if I get my rpm rate too high it becomes very difficult to do anything well.  If I put too much side rotation on the ball it will likely overreact at the breakpoint, so I compensate and take a little off of it and it doesn't make it back.

Though right now my main goal not to injure my middle finger any further, but that's another story....
