Pick one, A or B
« on: December 08, 2004, 12:17:32 AM »
Say you have two bowlers “A” and B”.

Both have equal capabilities in the consistency of their approach, their launch angle, their accuracy at the arrow, their rev rates are equal, their ball speed is consistent, almost anything that is observable appears to be equal.

On a typical house shot both carry similar averages. Slight variations in these patterns may give one and edge over the other but generally no more than 5 pins in the long run. If anything on the house pattern bowler “A” has the advantage.

Neither struggles more with a flatter pattern from gutter to gutter but on the rare occasion when a pattern is flatter from foul line to the end of the pattern bowler “A” struggles more than bowler “B”.  Bowler “A” has a severe over/under as their ball enters the back of the lane while bowler “B” continues to have a controlled reaction. Bowler “B” will generally out average bowler “A” by at least 10 pins on this type of condition.

Is bowler “B” the better bowler? Bowler “B” really doesn’t execute any better but simply some small difference in their release gives them an advantage on these types of conditions.

It's a trick question.  Over several different "flat patterns" on different lane textures, if bowler B consistently defeats bowler A by even just a few pins, it is because bowler B is executing better.

Now if you're only looking at one particular flat pattern and B defeats A regularly, then you have a valid question.  And I would say on that pattern, B is better than A.  Bowler A has the same opportunity to adjust his/her style to compete with Bowler B.

I hope you don't think I am just nitpicking your question, but the question is based on an impossible scenario.  If they can do all things equal, then bowler B will not defeat bowler A on a regular basis unless A is Chris Barnes.

(I actually hate the ribbing that Barnes gets because I think it is unfair, but I couldn't resist...I'm all about a cheap laugh)

I love the last part.  Though I believe Barnes could still become a 20 titliest hall of famer!
