Correct PAP
« on: January 04, 2005, 02:06:58 AM »
I know that the most accurate way of determing a bowlers PAP is throwing the ball down the lane with a piece of white tape and someone watching. However, what about measuring off the flare track on the ball. What is the correct way? In other words, do you measure from the top of the flare/oil ring or do you measure from the middle of the flare? I have always used the top or flare/oil ring, but one pro shop in my area says it is the middle of flare.

Now, if it is done both ways and someone states their PAP is such and such, how do you know where it really is?

The accepted practice is to measure off the first track ring.

This would be the track furthest from the fingers and closest to the thumb (assuming you are right handed and track outside).

The first track ring is what your PAP is at release.

Different core dynamics and drillings will alter subsequent track rings so they are unreliable.

The three piece balls produce little track flare so that is why they are the easiest and best to measure off of, providing you have one that fits you.

This can be, but is not usually true.  If the ball is laid out so the pin is in the safe zone, the track bowtie will be above the finger holes.  Then the initial track will be closest to both the thumb and fingers.  If the ball is laid out with the pin below the fingers, the bowtie will be between the finger holes and the thumb hole and the above statement will be true.  As others have said, it is always best to determine the PAP on a low-flaring ball.  --  JohnP
