Anyone go up to 16lbs? Why?
« on: September 15, 2011, 01:04:09 AM »
I'm thinking of going back up to 16 lbs. in ball weight.  I feel like my back swing is getting a little crazy with a 15 lb. ball and the 16 lb. ball will help some.  Also, I notice that due to my spin/rotation, I do leave an occational 8-10.  I think the extra weight might help here.

Also, I'm buff so the extra pound is nothing.

Did you go up?  Why?  Did it help?

TIA

I've been throwing a sixteen pound ball since I was 15. I've tried a couple times with demo 15 pounders and I don't get the same carry.

I've been throwing 16lbs since i was 14???   I've stuck with 16lbs when 99% of everyone in bowling uses 15lbs or less....

I personally think if I went to 15lbs i would over throw the ball, and wouldnt get the carry i get right now.    Plus, i dont feel like replacing the 12 to 15 bowling balls I have right now......

I did notice years back when a few bowlers i knew switched to 15lbs, I noticed on heavier oil patterns, their carry was sometimes lacking....

Ive been throwing 16 since i was 12 yrs old.  I was 6'2 in 5th grade so i've been big my whole life.  And I throw it because i just over power a 15lb ball,  I left a lot of 5's, 5-10's, 5-7's when i bought one off a buddy to experiment with so with he extra pound I get a little more drive out of  16lbs then i did with a 15.. I went straight from a 12lb ball to a 16lb when i turned the age of 12

Rolled 16lb from age 15 to age 26.  Been about 6 months on 15 lbs and I'm liking it.  Carry is great and my arm isn't as sore after 6+ games.  I know some people are just better with 16 lbs, though, so if you're one of those, go for it.  I know Jack Jurek went from 16 to 15 and is back to 16 now.  Whatever works man.

I threw 16's when I was a teenager.  I went to 15's later and eventually had slow  ball speed and bad timing.  I worked with Carol Norman and she fixed my timing and the ball speed went thru the roof.  I still throw 15's but there are times I do go to 16.

Just this week I switched to 16's from 15's. I feel that 16's make my swing more free and it also makes it harder to overpower the ball. The carry is incredible too. I already shot an 859 (259 300 300) since I made the switch.

The only things that are truly permanent are death and Sharpies.

I started off with 16 when i was like 20 and at about 15 went to 15 cause that is all the proshop had at the time and 3 years ago I went back to 16 to see if it would slow me down which it did but my arm was hurting and didnt notice any diffrence in carry so went back to 15 and now am not going back up again. The carry isnt any better that i noticed

Really depends on style. I know all the macho men like to say that fifteeen is too light and they over power it, but... Let's remember litlle 135lbs Norm Duke throws 16 because he can't overpower 15 and needs the extra power.  Best rule of thumb I think is that if you leave more 8's and 9's than ten pins, drop doen to fifteen and you will improve carry. I f you leave too many tens and few 8's and 9's go  to 16 for the extra carry.

I've thrown 16 lb balls since my first one in 1963 except for a few months after my right hip replacement.  Then I went to 14 lb until I decided I could handle 16 lb again and was not satisfied with the carry using 14 lb.  I am speed challenged and rev dominant, so I need the extra lb to improve hitting power.  --  JohnP

I tried 15 lb for a year, but went back to 16 lb.  I felt my carry was not as good with 15 lb.

Is 16lbs really that great?  I have a 15lb arsenal and did notice a difference in the "hit"  when I threw a 14-pounder.  The vast majority seem to use 15lbs, but a lot of people on here are praising 16lbs.

I went back to 16 because due to age I got slower and the 15 was deflecting too much. With age you lose revs and speed, so if you can handle a heavier ball it helps. Sometimes, not always.

I use both 15 and 16lb. equipment, it depends on which house and type of shot I am bowling on.  In one house, the oil volume is longer down lane plus the backends are very weak.  So, I use my 16lb. stuff in this house to avoid deflection and get as much drive into the pocket as possible since I am forced to play a tighter and straighter line on the lane.  But, in another house I bowl in, the backends are very clean and crisp, and we bowl on the White pattern, which doesn't have a high volume of oil down lane.  So, I use my 15lb. equipment here, because the 16lb. stuff drives too hard much of the time and I leave a lot of blower 10 pins and 9 pins (I am left handed).  I averaged 234 in the 16lb. house, and 235 in the 15lb. house last season, so it seems to work well for me.  The biggest change I have to make, though, is when I use the 16lb. equipment I start the ball in a lower position on my pushoff, or else it screws with my timing too much and I am fighting it all night.  Otherwise, no problems going back and forth for me.
