Less is more part 2 ?
« on: August 26, 2004, 03:27:23 AM »
Assuming that the current mantra of less is more in bowling does this give an advantage to the fairer sex?

Women by nature are not as strong and tend to not be as aggressive physically as men. Do these attributes give them a leg up on the men in developing a non-hit release?

In my scratch league last night a team of local women has been put together and have entered the league. I watched them some (they were 2 pairs down). They all seemed to have less hit in their swings than the men they were bowling against and it appeared that this let them play the lanes differently as well. They more than held their own by winning at least the first game.

On the THB, women are at a disadvantage because carry becomes the dominate factor and typically the more powerful ball will carry better.  However, on more even patterns, where spares are more important, the top-level women can definitely compete and even win.

I'm not sure of the women you speak of, but I doubt they will make a run at the top 3 in the league based on the THS you will be seeing most of the time.

I’m not implying that these ladies throw a fluff shot. But I do, as well as many other male bowlers, muscle their swings and try to turn the ball violently.

Most of the better women bowlers I have seen rely more on technique and timing to gain leverage on the ball rather than muscling the shot.

Ksucat – Amy Dillon was one, a couple of the others were familiar but I don’t really know them. There was a couple of African American gals (one whose first name was Anita).

The league looks like it has gotten a lot tougher and will be a dog fight to see who wins but we will not be in the mix. I don’t believe these gals can win the league but they can finish inside the top 6.

There is Chilton, the kid’s team (Greene, Wilson, Futrell, etc), Penners team (Ron, Rich Rennolette, Keith, Tim Penner, Casey Slaughter), Matt McFayden started a team (Biazla, Jake Thompson, Beau McVey, Nick Vaughn), Billy Murphy’s team (they shot 1336 the last game, James Hall had a 300),  plus another 4 teams of college bowlers from Newman and WSU.

Yes, in a less = more enviroment, usually tougher, drier conditions, women will not be at a disadvantage because of their weaker release. And, may give women the advantage, in my opinion. =:^D
