Help!! Need to find a ball for my Wife
« on: October 03, 2004, 03:51:39 PM »
Hey everyone,
My wife has been bowling for about 3 years now with the same ball, a Columbia Beast Pearl, 12lbs w/inserts.  At the end of last year we noticed that the ball was cracking around the fingers, and this year she's really serious about getting a new ball.  I was wondering what you might reccomend for her.  Her speed is around 11mph sometimes as high as 13 and she has a good amount of hand in the ball.  My initial thought was something from storm (similar ball reactions), but she knows I love hammer, and we're staying away from columbia because everyball that either we had or someone we know had has cracked in the same manner.  Please help get her off my back!!!!

What conditions do you bowl on? What type of line does she like to play? What type of reaction does she want from the ball?

Sounds to me like someone needs a power groove reactive.

I got my wife a Power Groove reactive last year, Ice Blue Pearl. Moved her up to a 12#, now I'm shopping around and trying to convince her to move to a 14# for more carry. The 12#er deflects too much. But they are a great ball at a cheap price, plus there is alot of drilling options for different shots.

Typical house shot, medium/light oil, she likes to swing it wide anywheres from 15-5 or 15-1 she really likes swingin it to the channel, I was thinking about moving her up a couple pounds but I am unsure if she can handle it.

The power groove is not a weak ball and if it is light enough oil the groove will move on you she might have a hard time handling it at low speeds.

Well a power groove would be a good choice, also maybe something like a reactive scout drilled aggressive. Moving her up to 14 pounds would be your best choice for carry, UNLESS!, you go to a hammer ball, maybe a blade, and get her a 13 pounder. Since they have cores, they still carry, just less then the 14, but better then 12's.

Increasing weight by even a pound will give her the opportunity to throw balls with cores in them that are more dynamic than their 12 lb. counterparts.  Not really going to find a ball quite like that Beast Pearl anymore, but there are some pearl reactive balls out there that have low RG differential numbers like the Roto-Grip Sonic Boom, Ebonite's Ice, and Storm's new Pro Stock Pearl.  Seeing as you are not interested in Columbia I left off about 3 other options.

If she's looking for something different get ready for a wild ride...   there are tons and tons of balls on the market now.

Thank you everyone, your replies so far have given us a few options, J Mac the only reason we're not considering columbia is because of the cracking problems we have encountered and heard about.  We will definitely look at the Storm Pro Stock Pearl and something from either the Blade or Diesel line from hammer.  I will talk to her and see if she is willing to move up a pound or two so that she can have more carry capabilities

My wife uses a Storm hotwire drilled strong and a hotrod drilled weak, best two ball arsenal you can find.
