I've never tried a grip removal tool, but I usually go slow with my swiss army knife to get the insert out with minimal damage.

Funny this question should come up .. yesterday when my ball came back on the ball return .. it was apparent that my THUMB SLUG was about ¼ inch below the surface! I was thinking of going to the Pro shop to have it fixed .. should I do it myself?

Inserts and slug are two different animals. No to the slug. If you plan to change your inserts much, spend the money and get an insert puller, well worth the $'s and easy to use.

Buy a VISE tape knife.  They are great!

I agree with "Smash" ... I have had GREAT success with the VISE knife. Just take your time doing it and the damage SHOULD be next to nothing.
