left eye dominate for right hand bowler
« on: May 24, 2005, 01:37:42 PM »
I got hard time to have my strong eye on left eye because of some disability of my right eye after a serious surgery. being a right hand bowler, my target is always inconsistent, especially in my spare shot, I have tried a lot of method such as add target board, more veritcal balance..etc. sometime it is useful but sometime not, it is especially when I cannot concentrate myself in league paly after work by distraction.

for those who have same problem as me, please share me your experience. please don't mind my silly question because I really suffer for that from after my surgery in these years. I have read a lot of tips even ron' stuffs but I still cannot slove my problem.

left eye dominance for right handers is common for great golfers.

Nicklaus, Jones and not as great; but pretty good, me!

I was at one time a fine bowler right handed.  I believe it is not that important, as a steady head in the release area for accuracy!

Thanks Greg7,
this is exactly what in my mind, you know my suffering so intensively, I have a old days silver coach here and we both trying to fix this problem in these days, the hard time reason is before I know the compensation of the borad differents, I used to use all my energy to hit the mark that caused me force the release so bad, so if I cannot concentrate after work, my muscle memory get back and caused me error. I always think there should be some hidden magic in bowling sport, I am trying out all alignment, any finally I found if I use my right foot for board counting and faced my body more right/open, then it is good enough, I can see that kind of alignment is what partick allen like but this is just my own opinion.

Anyway, this kind of targeting/alignment are not even agreed by the others, that is why I am so sad and seeking someone to help me out.

having two eys gives you greater depth perception. eye dominance in bolwing is not all that big a deal.

you are looking at a single fixed target several feet away. you are not lining up a projectile by two fixed points.

if you consistently miss your target I would look at the issue of a inside/out swing. inconsistent distance between your setdown and foot position.

i'm a lefty with right eye dominance...  the only affect to me is that i'll be seeing my ball hit 5 board when it's actually 7-8.  as long as i'm consistent with myself there's not problem.

it's when i talk to others "I hit 5 board", "no, you weren't even close" that the deficiency comes out.

I am also RH, left eye dominate.  Doesn't really bother me with bowling.  I tend to just aim for an area, nothing as precise as a single board.  I just throw a couple and get a feel for where the ball needs to go.  Once I find it I'm pretty good about repeating the shot.

Makes it that much more difficult for hunting or shooting with a scope.

try closing your eyes, let your mechanics take over.. if you are lined up properly, you shouldn't need your eyes.

Just reading through here, I saw that someone mentioned covering the right eye with something. This is often done in shooting sports for beginning shooters with cross-dominance. Many sporting goods stores (i.e.: Dick's, Gart's, Bass Pro, Cabela's) sell special glasses that are designed to do this . . . Or, you can get a pair of old shop goggles or whatever, and place a piece of duct tape over one eye.
