Regarding Merle Mathews, she bowled out of Southern California for many years. Merle and Donna Zimmerman (another great professional woman bowler) owned Hall of Fame Bowling Center in Long Beach. Both Merle and Donna lived in Huntington Beach, California. During the late 50's and early 60's Southern California had a slew a great women bowlers. Among them were Robbie Frey (Rickard), D.D. Jacobson, Betty Phillips and Mary Hoit, just to name a few. A little trivia for everybody. Robbie Frey was originally from the Dallas, Texas area and used to date Mickey Mantle who owned a number of bowling centers in Texas.
