In Maine it is called Candle Pin Bowling, where the pins are like two feet tall, and flat at both ends. If one averages 75-80, that is very respectable.

In 1994 or 1995 there was still a duckpin alley in Johnstown PA. We walked in there one night looking for a pro-am that was NOT there. We wanted to get back there and bowl but did not make it. I often wonder if it is still there?

I did duck pin in Connecticut when I was a wee lad. My first candle pin experience was last year in New Hampshire. If you have Ten Pin delusions of Grandeur, candle pin will sober you up!

Duck pins is still going strong in the Baltimore area -- both houses that I am bowling in are half ten and half duck pins. I bowled duck pins until I was 16 then made the switch to ten pins.

Are you sure that what's in that video is called Candlepin Bowling where you're from?? Being that I'm from New England also, I'd have to strongly disagree. That's definitely duckpin bowling in the video, albeit different from the duckpin I've bowled..

Yeah I was on TDY in the Boston area and they hand candle pin bowling and I must say very difficult.

-this is rubber band duckpin bowling.
-candlepin bowling is not the same it uses candle shaped pins and balls that are ever so slightly different in size.
-there is also duckpin w/o rubber bands which are not tethered by strings.
-there is also (in canada) 5-pin bowling which is a tethered duckpin w/ rubber bands set up in a "v" shape (approx where 1,7,10 pins would be with pins between the 2-4 and 3-6 spots). scoring on this is different with head pin being worth 5, second row worth 3, and back row worth 2 if memory serves).
all of these allow a 3rd shot for wood purposes on-max 10-15 pins along with strikes and spares.

I used to play a lot of duckpin bowling in College Town Maryland. The pins were not tethered to strings though. It was very challenging, you can leave some really whacky splits because the pins are a lot smaller then 10-pin, the balls are a lot smaller (as you can see from the video) but the lanes are roughly the size as 10-pin lanes (or maybe they're the same size, not sure). Pocket shots can leave some NASTY splits that you just can't leave in 10-pin bowling.
