Name some of the SMOOTHEST-reacting bowling balls:
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:38:21 PM »
My teammate is a grizzled veteran of the game and has been using the same old equipment for several years.  His benchmark ball is an old Reaction Arc and he also has a Quake that comes out when he wants a little more angle.  He has tons of talent and is deadly accurate.  He carries a 215+ avg. every season with this ancient equipment.

I was talking to him today and he is ready to pick up some new equipment for the season, and he mentioned that one thing that is important to him is that his ball not over-react.  He wants to be able to control the breakpoint and backend, and he has plenty of hand to be able to get even weak equipment to move a decent amount.  Basically he is looking for a smooth, even, arcy reaction.

My first thought was a Tsunami H20, but I would like to provide several options for him, because he knows I am the ball-o-phile  So hit me with a few of your suggestions; I told him he could select a layout that is weaker as well, but he wants some ideas on which balls would fit the bill regardless of layout.

On edit, it would be helpful if any suggestions involved newer equipment that is easily available.  Might be kinda tough to run down some of the discontinued stuff.

Good point, it does matter what kind of oil we normally bowl on.  In our center we typically see medium-heavy on synthetics, 60 units in the middle out to about 6 along the gutters.  He is also looking for a decent benchmark to take with him to tournaments when he doesn't know what to expect.  He'd like to be able to use the same ball(s) for leagues AND tourneys.

Then I'd suggest balls like
Legends New Standard or New Standard 2
Brunswick Scorchin' Inferno
Roto-Grip Epic Battle
Storm Passion
Columbia Wrath XP
Ebonite SmashTime

Most of these should handle Medium-heavy oil without being anywhere near flippy.

FYI Lower pins, kicked out CG positions requiring weight holes, and lower sanding grits make balls' reactions smoother.

I'd have to say that the Ambush is a great choice.  Other good choices are the Strike Zone, WMB, Overtime, and if you can find one, the V2 sanded.

Smoothest ball I've seen is the Ebonite Smash Time

The black Pure Hammer, for me with a sanded surface. Reads the lane quite early (30' for me), but arcs all the way to the pocket, very even reaction.

"Mocks" perfectly a classic urethane reaction or moves like an old-fashioned havy oil particle ball - just on light to medium conditions. I love mine for dry lanes and down-and-in shots across 2nd arrow on a THS.

The smoothest ball I have seen is the Black Widow, hands down.  And that is with the cover in box condition.

Ebonite - TPC Shooter (If U can find one)
Brunswick - Zone Classic
Roto Grip - Super Sonic

Just put some Low RG-drills on them and he'll be set..

For a little oil i would go with..:

Storm - X-Factor Ace / Polish knocked off
Roto Grip - Saturn
Roto Grip - Epic Battle
Hammer - Black Widow
AMF - Nighthawk - According to the AMF ppl at Bowl Expo said they would be releasing it again due to popular demand..

A buddy of mine just got a Black Widow last week, drilled to flip, is very smooth with a nice read in the midlane, but still a beast in the backend.. Think that ball is gonna be popular..

Check out the new InSite SuperNatural --> http://www.insitebowlingproducts.com/supernatural.html

The cover can be tuned to handle anything from heavy oil to medium oil and is the smoothest reacting ball I have ever thrown.

Scorchin Inferno
V2 Sweet

Scorchin a little smoother, but the V2 was very noticable

Its hard to play with an inferno and not get burned. Last time I threw my inferno, the opposing bowler definitely got burned.

Since I only throw Infernos, just call me the Flamethrower.

A 220-grit medium load particle ball is smooth?  No kidding.

I beg to differ.  Maybe on some conditions, but the first time I threw mine it was one of the most angular balls I've thrown.
