Clean Releases/Soft Hands
« on: June 30, 2009, 03:46:25 AM »
So lately, I've been experimenting with the "PDW" release, where I make sure my hand is as soft as possible and I don't cup my fingers towards me after release.  I can safely say I am tripping more 4 pins and getting generally better pin carry on not flush hits.  Why does this happen with a softer release?

because you pay $200 for a bowling ball, you should let IT do the work.

I'm not an expert, but I would think the more you "hit up" on the ball, the earlier it is going to expend energy.  This means less energy through the pin deck.

I think you mean more energy through the pin deck not less Opps I meant with soft hands and clean release not the old school release.

I have been using this method the last year and went up 10 pins a game no matter where I bowl now. Shot 724 last thursday using the soft approach.

Bary, don't you also have reverse pitch in your fingers?  I am currently experimenting with reverse finger pitch.

Cut way back on reverse more like 1/4 rev in middle and 3/16 ring now, but went to the clear Turbo Ice grips soft and tacky they do all the work now.

When I use a ball with Vise grips they are almost loose feeling now, I do use the lifter side of either grip. So i guess that would add reverse back into the equation but alot less than the 1/2 reverse each finger days.

Was doing similar in a wood lane house last night with my Particle pearl U turn. It's just a feel adjustment for me, i barley know its happened till i finish. Plus when you stone an 8 pin from inside 25 at the arrows with a ball that weighs 13lb13 you know youre catching it clean. Was very happy with the 4/945 set(and the clean 40 frames!!)

FYI, I use Turbos myself but in the last year have drilled a couple of balls for guys who were using Vise grips. When they gave me their grip sizes, I ordered Turbos instead of Vises and found the Turbos are "tighter" at the same hole size. In other words, if you usually use 13s and 25s in Vise, you may need to step up to 27s and 13s in Turbo.

Getting back on topic, often times when you are trying to really pull on a ball at the bottom to rev it up, your muscles are actually just getting it the way. The PDW feel is something I have been going back and forth on for years. I will actually get more RPMs when I am not trying to work the ball. Pretty much you are just getting all the unneeded muscle out of the way of your release. So you are getting out of the ball cleaner and smoother. This translates to better timing, accuracy and more power.

Thank you for that, good explanation.

I worked on it in my PBA league, and tonight on a THS.  I can safely say on the PBA shot, I only crossed over 3 or 4 times in 5 games, where it's usually 7 or 8.  And I was much much more accurate, allowing me to adjust quicker when my ball hit where I wanted but did something I didn't want.
