Coaching Articles

Over the next few weeks I need to gather information to write some articles about coaching.  Bowling coaching is a large topic and has wide amount areas.  Some of the things I am curious about will be like how many people on this forum are certified USBC and or Dick Ritger coaches.  Of those that are how many actually charge and make money from their coaching.  How many are actually active in their coaching.  What would be opinions about the state of coaching.  How many people have taken the courses and never done anything and why.  Comments would be appreciated.

I am level 1 certified. 1st year actively coaching a NEW high school team. I would love to see more arcticles.

I don't think The USBC lvl 1 certification online is a good idea. I ha so much trouble trying to disect what was flawed in a 2 inch square video screen.

This is my 1st coaching experience ever, and am at the point where I am starting to charge for lessons. Not for kids at this point.

i am also a level 1 usbc coach but i have not done anything with that yet.  the reason i have not done anything is i would like to be bronze certified before i start teaching.  once i get the bronze i would like to try and start a high school team at a local school.

Not certified.

I coach Junior League on Saturday morning, this is my 6th season.  It has been suggested by a few people that I should give lessons and charge, but I don't for various reasons.  While I don't charge, there are a couple people that I give "lessons" to on occasion (not including the kids that stick around after league for extra help).

Bronze level coach, 3+ years

Volunteer Work
-spent 2 seasons as a volunteer coach in Youth League working under silver coach

-now in 2nd season with Youth League in a different center. I coach Sat morning league, Sunday travel team, I just started a weekly practice session for the kids.

-I offer private/group lessons at no charge to our Youth bowlers.

Paid Work
-assist the pro shop operator with bowling clinics throughout the area.

-I have a small group of paying students. All are word of mouth referrals or students from our bowling clinics. I don't actively advertise.

Future Plans
-Silver Level, this winter
-IBPSIA Certified Technician, next 1-2 years
At that point I will probably begin to recruit more paying students.

It seems the current staff of USBC is stressing the "Elite Athlete".  The majority of the USBC membership is no where close to this level and many are not interested.  I would like to see the USBC concentrate coaching more to the membership masses and youth development.  The room for working "Elite Coaches" is very small and the majority of people needing coaching are entry level and youth.( My Opinion )
Another issue is that many coaches once they obtain a certain level have no desire to go any further. ( Saturday Youth League )  I would like to see a support structure setup to maintain levels effectively and if someone wishes to go further thats ok.
How many people after they take a course come out of it and go "ok now what"?  Ok so I am a level X.  

I am looking for general conversation about how is your coaching experience and what would you like to see.

I am in my 6th year of coaching.  I was USBC Level I certified from years 2 through 5.  I became USBC Bronze certification this past June at Bowl Expo in a class taught by Bill Monce.  I am also a USBC Registered Volunteer.

I currently coach in a junior program every Saturday morning.  The center treats me and my fellow coaches (1 Silver, 2 Bronze and 2 non-certified) well enough.  We get 6 free games per week and 25% off food at the snack bar.  More importantly, we get 2 free games per youth per week for coaching after league.  Additional games cost the youth $1 with a coach and $1.50 without a coach.

I do not currently do formal private lessons but I do help fellow bowlers by request.  I do not charge for those informal lessons.

That is good to know.  When I started coaching the center I was at gave me free lineage.  This lasted about a year and with one of their many changes in management they opted to give me what employees received for lineage price.  That was $1.50 a game.  Next they gave me nothing, regular rates were the prices.  One of the centers managers was very anti coaching and would go out of his way.  There would be no one in the center except my student and myself and he would try to charge us for 3 lanes.  With no one in the house but us, the next person that came in got the  lane right next to us.  Other centers I had no problems at.
