Appearance of current balls...
« on: January 24, 2018, 11:35:18 PM »
I realize there are about 2,316 more important things to gripe about, but I can't get over how many current balls are just plain ugly. To me, balls look the best when they're one color or two colors, max. It seems some companies want to see just how big a mess they can make. You have balls with red, green, black and purple all in the same ball. It looks like someone puked a bag of Skittles up. Also, news flash to the kid in the resin department -- when you mix red and green pigment together, you get brown. Stop thinking you can effectively mix red and green together and not have it coming out looking like cow chips.

It takes a deft touch to use two high-contrast colors effectively. I remember a ball Roto Grip did that was called (I think) the Winning Streak; it was an overseas Silver Streak I think. The ball was ice blue and bright red. It looked like an ICEE cup rolling down the lane, very pretty. Now when I see blue and red together on a ball it inevitably starts to look like a glass of red wine gone vinegar.

Yes I think there are some really good combos and some really bad one.

My least favorite new ball, look wise right now is the Inception DCT pearl.  There use to be a nasty looking plastic Brunswick axis and I think a white dot as well in the white/purple/green color. Looks terrible.
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

I think the RG Haywire was the ugliest ball ever.
The DCT Pearl gets that honor for the newest releases, with the Storm Drive close behind.

I think it's called "marketing 101".

The louder and more outrageous the color combination, the more attention it gets sitting on the shelf.

Admittedly, most males, including myself and you, the largest portion of the bowling ball population, prefer more muted tones. Many of us will see these highly colored balls sitting there and ask, "What the bleep is that?"
"None are so blind as those who will not see."

Maybe its just me, but the DCT Pearl looks awesome and different. Im drilling mine today and cant wait to throw it tonight. Now i like throwing more solid colored balls but something about the pearl stands out.

Agreed. I like black, deep blues, or deep purples if mixing. Otherwise only one color of whatever color.

When I needed a replacement for my old black and silver Storm Ice, I couldn't buy the current baby blue/white color combo Storm Ice that's currently out there.  It's not visually appealing to me.

One edge to being mildly color blind is looks of the ball are a very secondary concern.  In fact the only thing I generally care about with color is its nice to be able to see how the ball is rolling with decent contrasting colors since I don't use inserts.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

I've been ok with the colors coming out recently, I don't really have any complaints. The Beyond Ridiculous is a little out there. I wasn't sure about the color on my Tag Cannon but it looks a lot better than that ball in my eyes

I prefer darker colors and/or colors that mix together. If there's a big contrast in colors my eyes don't like it while trying to read the reaction

I think the cas is ugly. The drive is ugly too.I thought it would be better looking then the Timeless.

I like the Tag Cannon colors.  A low-rev/low speed lady who bowls in my mixed league throws one and when it rolls down the lane it's very hypnotic.

I am learning to watch my ball skid, hook, roll much more closely.

A multi-color ball pattern helps see this much better than a solid.

For me there are very, very few bowling balls that make me pause and think it looks terrible. However, the Inception DCT Pearl is one of them. Man that pearl green is awful.

Otherwise it's just whatever. Odd mixes or colors don't give me much trouble reading the reaction. And I don't really care what the ball looks like either. There are too many other things to overthink when choosing a ball (or balls), no need to add to that list.

There has only been a couple of balls through the years I wouldn't buy on appearance.

The Yellow angle.
The Bone XS.

There may have been a few others but those 2 stand out. Funny they were both AMF balls.

I'm with you. I like the look of it. I also like the look of balls like the No Rules Pearl and Hypercell Fused. Original Daredevil as well. Hell, lots of current RG stuff. Just looks better going down the lane to me than boring, bland colors/color combos that others are talking about.
