I don't claim to be an expert either, but I'll throw in some thoughts. Generally speaking, I adhere to the pattern length minus 31 method to determine where the ball should be at the end of the pattern. With that being said, 40-31 = 9. As such, if it were me, I'd start the day with a control piece trying to go as straight up the lane as I could to get the ball to that spot, and I'd ball down and continue bumping left from there.
A couple of things to keep in mind are that on most Sport patterns you want control off the spot, so if your son is truly rev-dominant, he'll want to use equipment that isn't going to go sideways the second it reaches the end of the pattern. Also, due to the high volume (28+ ml) and the very slick conditioner (Ice), getting in deep can prove tricky because the ball is likely to clear the heads and midlane very quickly (assuming the lane surface isn't high friction to begin with), which could cause the ball to squirt too far outside to make it back. Even if it does make it back, if it does so in a jerky fashion, your boy could find himself coming in behind the head pin all day long, which will lead to pocket 7-10's, 2-8-10's, etc.
Long story short, again, I'd encourage him to try to play the lanes as straight as he can for as long as he can unless he KNOWS that he can whack them from a deeper line.
