I have a problem
« on: March 17, 2004, 10:36:31 PM »
Drilled up a new X-Factor the other day.  Drilled it label because I wanted to try that kind of drilling, haven't gone with something like that in a long time.  My problem is that it rolls over the middle finger hole.  I track pretty high to begin with, and have had trouble with tracking over a little of the thumb before, but I've NEVER had a problem with tracking over any of the fingers.  I throw this ball the same as my other stuff, and it thumps all the way down the lane.  I can put 45 degrees of axis tilt on it, and the track is still RIGHT by the fingers and thumb.  I have a little bit of side weight left so I can put a weight hole in it, but the question is where should I put it?  Or should I just redrill it?  The reaction is awesome, I've just never run into anything like this before.  My bowtie on it is like right above the middle finger.  Suggestions?

Hmm, the pin's about 3.5 from my pap.  The cg is about 4 or maybe 4.5 from my pap.  Lol, just how techincal are you trying to get?  I'm a high tracker, about 17 or 18 mph, 300-350 revs . .  Safe zone?  As long as I've been on here and as much as I've read, I've never heard that term before.

i had a track that would flare and 'bowtie' about an inch from my ring finger. i changed my hand position and release. now it is damn near 3" away from my fingers. i turned my hand in *thumb away from the body at 8 o clock position* and the track moved, the ball hooked harder... i dunno why i am giving you advice, i am always reading what advice you give me!

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?

In general, a weight hole at least 3" directly below your PAP (if there's enough side weight and thumb weight) will move your bow tie higher and SHOULD (no guarantees, but it has worked before for several people) move your track enough away from the fingers; so, it no longer thumps over them/it.

This position of the weight hole also will allow very high trackers to place the pin just below the fingers for an early/earlier roll.

This weight hole also increases the flare. On a pearl, it may make the ball hook more at the backend, because a pearl skids/clears the heads so easily.

I first saw this theory expounded by Denny Torgerson, a ball expert from/for Ebonite.

Hamster Resurgence -- Use the link that follows to go to the drilling instructions for the Big Blue. Then scroll to the very bottom and look at the diagrams of pin safe zones for high and low track bowlers. A picture is worth 1000 words.  (We talk about the "pin safe" zones quite frequently on the Drilling and Layouts board)-- JohnP

Haha, that might be why I've never heard the term safe zone before . .  Thanks for the link, that helps quite a bit.  The pin is in my safe zone at least, which now makes me wonder if the ball is mismarked, because it APPEARS to already be a color blem.  it's got a LOT of pink in it around the top half of the ball.  Looks nothing like any X-Factor I've seen before.  Anyway, a friend suggested the weight hole, and after the advice from charlest, I have nothing to lose really, so it's no biggie if the weight hole doesn't work.  I should have enough weight, the cg is still right of my vertical midline, and a little below my horizontal midline.  I worry that with the increased flare that it might flare over the hole, but as long as it doesn't flare out, that doesn't matter.  I had a Super Charge that flared so much that I could actually get it to track over the thumb on the RIGHT side of the fingers.  Thanks guys, I'll see what I can do with it.

Hamster,

I tried this exact weight hole with my Icon2. I drilled the pin too far from the PAP to get the reaction I wanted. So I added this exact weight hole. In my case, the ball reaction change, which is what I wanted, was large, huge even. I am farly certain this will move your bowtie, but if you will be happy with the ball reaction, I can't say. (Wish I had kept that Icon2.)

Good luck!

It did move it, but not enough.  The ball reaction was a little earlier and stronger, but I'm just gonna redrill it.  I LOVE the X-Factor though, geez.  I need to retire my first one, but it's my go-to ball, and until I can replace it, I'm gonna hang onto it.
