Approved cleaners during competition
« on: December 27, 2010, 12:41:25 AM »
Can somone tell me where I can find this list?  So during a tourney after every few shots I can spray these approved cleaners on a towel to clean off the oil?  I always assumed that was illegal.  Thanks for all info.

Thanks MC.  I was so unaware that you could use a cleaner while bowling a set.  Thanks for the info.

It depends on the actual tournament rules. USBC rules state you can, but tournament rules override USBC. Even USBC doesn't let you clean your ball during Nationals.

i suggest printing the list off and put a copy in your bowling bag.

had issues last yr. where a tournament offical said i couldn't use my cleaner (simple green) and didn't have a copy so i couldn't get belt marks off ball.

This yr when bowling our league sec. he tried the same thing but this time i had a copy.  He went to the usbc rule book and i went to my bag and put the approved list on table in front of him.

I recently had a somewhat similar incident with a woman in one of my mixed leagues. I was cleaning my ball with Valentino's Remedy RX during warm-up shots before we even began league bowlng and she began trying to tell me I couldn't use that ball. I told her that the cleaner was legal to use any time. (before-during-after bowling) She got mad and stormed off and protested to the league secretary of whom wasn't up to date on the rules. I told the secretary that I would bring a list the next week along with a copy of the specific rules pertaining to it.

I made 2 copies, one for secretary and one for myself of which I put in my locker for future reference should this problem ever arise in the future. I gave the secretary a copy, she looked at it and showed it to the lady protester and problem solved although that particular lady won't speak to me now, of which I don't care whether she does or not.

In reading this list that MC posted i have developed a question....

What are Tenth Frame's "Ultra Clean" and Master's "Master BAll Cleaner" not allowed EVER?

Are they not bowling ball specific cleaners designed by bowling industry manufacturers for use on bowling balls?

Anybody shed some light on this?

I don't know about Master Ball Cleaner, but I do use Tenth Frame's "Ultra Clean". It says right on the label that it contains Acetone and "petroleum distillates". So that must be the reason they are on the banned list.

I buy Ultra Clean for one reason, nothing else I've tried removes belt marks like this stuff does. Even straight acetone doesn't work as well.

I buy this cleaner at the Pro Shop @ Earl Anthonys Dublin bowl. I think they sell it because it is a house know for belt marks.

If you choose to use this cleaner, be aware that it will change the surface of the ball with heavy use. :-)

10th Frame's Ultra Clean contains acetone. It's right on the label.
Don't mistake it for Ultimate's Ultra Clean which is approved!!

Not sure about Master Ball Cleaner.

Thanks milo.....is that Ultra Clean the stuff in the round white bottle with the blue lettering? It has the consistency of dish washing liquid? Or is that Ultimate?

If it is I used to use that all of the time but had not been able to find it so I started carrying something else.

Thanks again!

This is in a bottle that has XXX at the top, blue and red lettering on a white bottle. And the bottle does''nt have a spray top, just a click open like a thicker cleaner would have.

The consistency is pretty much the same as water or maybe alcohol. Not thick at all.

You know the rule, it's only illegal if you get caught!

But seriously, it's not a cleaner I use much, just to remove the really tough belt marks as it is a bit too harsh on the coverstock. Lane Masters cleaner will usually do the trick just fine. For everyday use, I find Simple Green/Water at a 50/50 ratio to be plenty.
