What is going to take for you to be a better bowler?
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:35:24 PM »
We are reaching summer time. The long winter leagues are done. Most bowlers have placed the bowling equipment on the shelf for the year, but some of us still bowl during the summer months. Do any of you plan to improve on something? If so...what do you think its going to take for you to get to that next level? What ever it maybe?

- the next level could be to average over 200, get a 300 game, throw a 600, 700, or 800 series, how about better spare shooting, or a more consistent release, more revs/less revs, anything? .....

Lose about 40lbs and practice on sport patterns all summer to get my accuracy back so I can dominate the house cake next year. Also get myself a coach and work on getting some better leverage and roll on my ball, plus get better timing to get better leverage. For me, this summer is all about whooping a$$ next year.

Several studies suggest that it takes about 10,000 hours of deliberate, focused practice with immediate feedback / instruction to master a skill (see Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" or Geoff Colvin's "Talent is Overrated" for an introduction).  The same studies appear to indicate that natural talent / aptitude / skill is largely irrelevant.  Given that 10,000 hours works out to roughly three hours per day for almost ten years, I'd suggest starting practice ASAP.

Those studies might be true, but there are certain people with natural talent that can pick things up very quickly. Those people are fortunate enough to not have to practice three hours a day for 10 years. Practice does make (near) perfect though!

40 lbs? Man, you've porked up! Texas BBQ THAT good?

It's the bomb to be bowling on something that requires skill. Minute changes actually make for a different ball reaction. Last 2 weeks bowling on the USBC shot made me realize that my equipment is drilled for the house stuff I see. My Bank is money on it, and everything else I can't even think of using on the fresh.

At least no one is shimwrecking me. Been lucky thus far.

So far, with me working on getting my game back into shape on the USBC shot, I have noticed the small changes that make big differences in ball roll. So good.

I haven't porked up, just need to lose weight to feel better. Fitness is the best thing I can probably do for my game right now.

I'll agree with you on that one, dude. I need to hit the gym to work on the legs and core.

BTW, I'm just jealous. I wish I had 40 extra to lose. I lose 40, I'm in double digits, bro. :(

I think losing weight would help me as well. I know it would help me with my flexibility. For a big dude I can move pretty well, but I end up really stiff sometimes. More flexibility would help with consistency.

Another thing I need to work on is my spare game. I don't mind leaving a single pin. It means I was very close to where I needed to be. The problem is I blow off the shot. I either over-think things and miss, or I concentrate on one shot at a time and go off on a great streak. If I'm hot, I don't miss spares. But when I'm cold, it's strike or nothing haha.

Working on timing and consistency, until I can master (avg over 200) in the sport league.  20 more pins in avg to go.
14lb 15.5 mph at pins 325 Revs. Silver Coach, Ball Driller. In Bag:  Storm Pro-Motion, Hyroad X, Matchup, Code Red.

I am primarily focused on the spare game to improve my conversion rate on the 10 pins.  Also I am working on improving my footwork, arm swing and keeping my hand behind the ball until i finish downswing & release.

I would have to travel god knows how long to bowl on some sort of sport shot..30+ miles? Best thing I can do is ignore the shot and score and focus on better shot repetition.  Really working on my armswing, making it more like a pendulum with minimal muscle etc (per Ron Clifton in BTM recently). Also using my spare ball for most all spares this summer, first time in competition on ths, after several summers of practice, and so far so good.
Stop being the problem, and start being part of the solution
