Should Bowler's Tape be Stored at Room Temp?
« on: January 27, 2017, 02:23:26 PM »
I think it's a well know fact that leaving your reactive bowling balls in the trunk of your car or garage all season all is a bad thing due to temp swings and such, but I'm curious to know if it's a good idea to keep all your bowler's tape white/black/silver or whatever in a place such as your trunk or garage all yr round? Do temp swings affect the tape's adhesiveness, sticking to the paper backing over time or is this just a myth? Silly question but it just occurred in league the other night when I saw a guy warming his bowling ball under the hand dryer before league and thought if tape would be affected. lol

Not sure about the cold, but the heat is another problem.
Some people leave their balls and equipment in the car during summer months in the South and the West where summer temps INSIDE the car can be hot enough to extract oil and plasticizer from bowling balls. If the environment in their bowling bag can get that hot, it can surely melt the glue on some or many tapes.

I'd bring them and some other items indoors if your area is subject to these extremes of temperatures.

With any kind tape, You should store it in a cool place, keep it dry, UV can damage it overtime so don't leave it in the light. Don't buy too much up front, you want to keep it fresh.

I think storing my rolls of storm white tape and my hada thumb tape in the garage in the shelf ruined the adhesive somewhat and the "stiffness". But not sure if the Storm is as stiff as the master white tape though. I was given the rolls of storm tape from PSO who moved out and bought a bowling alley in Henderson, Nevada. (i think, him and his wife did)

I gave away all the HADA I had, some would be hard to peel off the backing paper.

You mean Lonnie and Diana? If so, Boulder City, not Henderson.  ;D

I lived in Phoenix when I did most of my bowling.  My equipment was either in my garage, my car, or the bowling center.  The only issue is tape goo.  One day too long and you go from clean removal to the dreaded mess.  The no longer made Progrip Tape Residue Remover was always on hand for such situations.

Yes, them two. Nicest people I've met.

Yea, great people. If you are ever in Vegas, make time to go down to Boulder City and see their bowling alley. It has 8 lanes and above ground ball returns. They replaced the old wood lanes with synthetics and the place is in great shape.

I just realized my nephew lives BC and I stay the night when I'm there. I think 35 mins to vegas south point?

I had a tourney at the hotel one year and pulled an ass muscle, all because I didn't take off the white tape and clean that goo-e mess on the sides. I made the mistake of leaving my equipment in the car in that summer heat.

the ball almost took me for a Machuga flop

Nail polish remover, MEK helps with removing goo from melted thumb tape, I hear goo off works though I've never tried it.

Well I'm from the Tri-state area so I wouldn't say we experience huge swings though this winter has been pretty mild except for a few instances of extreme cold and some snow. Guess I'll start erring on the side of caution and just keep all my tape accessories in my locker at the lanes instead of my bag that stays in my trunk yr round. Thanks everyone!

Be careful about nail polish remover. In addition to acetone, it contains oils so the lady's hands don't get dried out. The oil is good for them, but not so good for finger holes. If I'm home, I use straight acetone with a glove of course. At the lanes I use my cleaner: LMB Int'l EXtreme ball cleaner. It will remove glue.

MEK is quite bad for a human being. I'd very VERY careful about using it without rubber, heavy duty gloves. In fact, I wouldn't use it at all.

Goo Gone is a citrus based cleaner that works fairly well and is much safer than more volatile solvents.  I always use rubbing alcohol to remove all remnants of the GG.  --  JohnP
